Flying out of Munich to Bangkok and Phnom Penh

Were up early to catch a taxi to the Hauptbahnhof and our train to Munich Hauptbahnhof where our adventures had begun 1 month before. We changed to the airport train and then checked in with Thai for our flight to Bangkok that arrived in at 6am in the morning.

I collected my stored luggage from the luggage storage, and Mum went over to the Novotel Hotel to stay for the day waiting for her midnight flight out back to Australia. I flew out to Cambodia at 7.50am Cambodia to meet up with Brad to conduct staff interviews.

A wonderful time indeed and I managed to live just under Australian $100 a day

Rainy morning in Cesky Krumlov and travel to Linz

It was raining and lovely and cool this morning at only 11degrees so I slept in until 8am and then read my book. Had to check out of the room by 10am so we stored our luggage at the office and donned our rain jackets and walked around in the light drizzle, looking inside shops before stopping at a cafe to have a cuppa.

Cost 152 CZK ( $8.70 AUD)

I then left Mum to do a quick uphill walk to the castle and up the top of the Castle tower for 50CZK ( $2.90 AUD) for last look around the town. Of course there is the added bonus to get some exercise before the CK Shuttle picked us up at 12.55pm.

The 1 1/2 hour trip to Lintz cost 400 CZK each ( $23 AUD) in a car with 2 other people. Our driver was lovely friendly young guy who expressed his concern over the number of refugees that had been allowed into Europe. It was a beautiful drive over the mountains into Austria

We were dropped at the Hauptbahnhof where we bought tickets to Munich Hauptbahnhoff and then out to the airport for 70.80E ( $110 AUD)

We walked over the road to the Ibis Hotel and discovered that we were not booked into this Ibis but another one...very annoying . We now had to go back to the station and catch a train a few stops to another Ibis Hotel.

Tram to Ibis 1.10 E Drinks at Ibis 7 E

Cesky Krumlov is perfect!

I met Mum at her hostel and we caught a taxi to the bus station. our bus to Cesky Krumlov went through the towns of Tabor and the Ceske Budejovice famous for Budweiser beer. The USA Budweiser beer chose the same name in 1876 because it was synonymous with good beer and a legal arm wrestle over the brand apparently continues today . The bus arrived in at 11.30am and it was a lovely 15 minute walk falling in love each step with Cesky Krumlov as we walked to the hostel.

Glad we arrived by bus rather than train as the train is a much further walk

Our directions were : Walk towards the castle to the main square Take the first street out of the main square - it was a narrow alley only about 3 feet wide Go left over the bridge over the river Turn right and walk 100 metres

It was up a narrow little cobblestoned streets and there it was just behind bar on the Vitavav riverfront ( same river as Prague is on)and just around the bend of the river from the castle. It has a cute little courtyard. Mum has her own room and I was in a 6 bed dorm. Accommodation in 6 bed dorm cost 315 CZK ( $18 AUD)

This gorgeous little town is situated in a horse- shoe bend of the windy Vitava River and was an important trade route. The castle on a rocky bluff across the river is the 2nd largest castle in Europe (after Prague) and a stronghold of the Rosenberg Family from 1302. The castle started out as gothic, then had renaissance renovations and finished as baroque. The town is the same and all the buildings in town are the same as they were in the 16th century.

On the river there was lots of kayaks and rafting. As we walked along the river we got talking with 2 Americans that had fallen out into the cold water.

At 2pm we went on the free walking tour that started in the main square by the fountain and went for 1 1/2/hours. It was again really well done paying the guide a tip at the end.

We went around the town and finished up at the castle where there are bears that live in the moat and have done for hundreds of years.

The sun was in and out all day and as rain threatened but ended beautifully with sunshine.

After the tour we sat in a cafe by the river to have a drink, wandered around the streets and riverside, and sat on the bridge eating pizza and listening to a busker. After the tourist buses with the day tourists leave it is very quiet . I also ended the day with an old fashioned ice cream between wafers 14 CZK ( .75 c AUD) Perfect end to our trip as tomorrow we start heading back to Munich via an overnight in Linz ( Austria)

Lazy day in Prague

Lovely lazy day with 4 seasons in 1 day kind of weather. It only reached 23 degrees and was around 10 overnight so lovely to sleep in and nice and cool in the morning. Mostly overcast with patchy sunlight where it got hot, to being cool in the shade and then wet in the shower and humid after wards as I walked up the hill!

I had grabbed a book from the hostel shelves that I was really enjoying it so lay in bed for hours reading it before getting dressed and grabbing my shake and egg from the fridge in the kitchen around 10am. Did some more reading and didn't head out until 1pm.

I did a lovely 3 hour walk around old town going back to see some spots that I had seen on the segway ride.. First up to the castle again as I had not yet climbed the 287 steps up past the massive bell of the South Tower . It was a fantastic view of the castle and cathedral below and the city.

I walked right through to the end of the castle and down hundreds of steps-to the river past a trumpeting busker whose dog howls as he played! I walked over one of the bridges with a great view back over to the famous Charles Bridge.

I walked into the Jewish quarter to see the old cemetery that has many layers of burials across the to Old Town Square to see the lovely church Tyn (with the black towers). Unfortunately it was closed on Mondays but I could look through the grill and it was very ornate. To get in you have to walk through the restaurant out the front, up a passageway to a small courtyard at the church entrance. The shops in front were built on to the front of the church which was pretty unusual.

I weaved around winding narrow cobblestoned streets until I reach the Charles Bridge and then walked along the riverfront up to the Mosti Legli Bridge that crosses over one of the small islands in the middle of the river. I stopped and ate corn on the cob for 50 CZK ( $2.87 AUD) on a bench and admired the view over the river up to the castle on the other hill.

On the other side I walked through parklands on the river front of Kampe Island It has a small canal and feels like a small Venice with houses onto the canal..

Again just wandering narrow streets and saw a sign that I recognised from the segway ride pointing to this garden. Our segway guide had pointed it out as a beautiful hidden garden. I walked up the passageway and bought a ticket for 65 CZK ( $ 4AUD) to enter and it was just stunning and built over terraces up a hillside between buildings. It was called Vertba Garden and accessible from Karmelitska St at Mala Strana. It was built in 1715 as an Italian style terrace garden.

I ended up wandering past several embassies in quiet cobblestoned back streets that led to a long staircase of steps up chill that begged me to go up and explore. I ended up in the parkland and walked past apple orchards up to the Monastery on the hill with great views in all directions. More wandering around back streets back to the hostel - great 3hour walk!!

Changed another 10 euro into 260 CZK

Now off to meet Mum for dinner. We watched these buskers outside her hostel and while there a girl came up to me and asked if I ran an organisation in Cambodia. I instantly recognised her from being in the same hostel as me in Waikiki Beach in February. She was a fellow aussie over with her Mum.....small world!!

Mum and I went out for dinner and had a Goulash soup

At 7pm we joined the Ghost and legends of Prague walk for 70 minutes around the back streets hearing some local myths and legends.

On the way back I climbed the Charles Bridge Tower next to Mum's hostel for 90 CZK ( $5 AUD) Cant miss the great views or another opportunity for a work out!

Segway Tour of Prague

Mum wanted her own room so found a hostel right next to the Charles Bridge Tower. Here is her new place, that she was very happy with.

They had a tours booking office downstairs so I managed to get a spot on the next 3 hour Segway tour leaving at 11am . 1500 CZK ( $84 AUD) Segway Pargue Tours www.segwayfun.eu Leaves from 2nd building next to Charles Bridge Tower on the new side of town Mostecka 4/53 Praha 1 - Mala Strana. Afte a quick lesson and practice run our group of 6 was off. We did a big tour of all the major sites both sides of the river in the new and old town. It is a great way to get an overview and then go back to visit places in more depth. It is also way too much fun riding a segway!

In the 14th century King Charles instigated much of the building you see today - the Charles bridge, built in 1357 university, rebuilt Prague castle that was built in the 9th century, St Vitus cathedral, the New town ( Lesser town or Little quarter called Mala Strana under the castle - where I stayed)

Town Hall famous for its astronomical clock

Twin gothic towers of Tyn Church

Money changers are everywhere

Czech Republic is also known as Bohemia and Moravia

After the segway tour Mum and I walkde up the castle and bought our entry ticket

Prague castle ticket 400 CZK ( $23 AUD) includes climbing the Tower ( St Vitus cathedral) Golden Lane a 16th century tradesmen quarters of tiny houses built into the castle walls was one of my favourite places. These homes were so tiny and cute.

Charles bridge has 30 statues from the 18th century, jewellery stalls, portrait artists and buskers, a powder tower and dungeons

Czech food strong on meat and dumpling and light in veggies. It is a bread dumpling not potato. Their Bohemian beer is said to be the worlds best and our segway guide said Czechs drink more beer than germans At 5pm Mum and I went to a Concert in LIchenstein Palace. It was in a small room with about 20 people. It cost 450 CZK ( $25 AUD) for an hour. There were ticket sellers all over town selling tickets to concerts held everywhere. I had never been to anything like this before and really enjoyed it. They played : Tchaikovsky - Nutcracker suite Vivaldi Bolero
