Hot Springs and spas

Lovely day being shown around this lovely town. Rotorua, a town of 70,00 people is nestled in a huge volcanic crater 20km across and on the edge of a large lake. The region has 18 lakes in total.

We were taken to all the geo thermal areas and hot springs that Rotorua is famous for starting first at Te Puia Thermal reserve. The maoris lived here and cooked their food over these same vents in the ground.

The bubbling mud pools of boiling water are still used for cooking and we even had our boxed lunch cooked out here.

The Pohuta geyser erupts 1 – 2 times a year and shoots water and steam as high as 30 metres

After lunch we headed with our togs to the Polynesian spa - hot mineral spa springs of various temperatures. It is nestled on the shore of Lake Rotorua which is a great backdrop when you are sitting in the hot springs.

Peple have flocked here since the 1800's and the pools are 36 degrees to 42 degrees. As it was cold and drizzly outside we stupidly thought we would start in the hottest pool of 42 degrees and could not get past our knees as it was so hit!! So we started off in the 36 degree pool and worked our way slowly up to the 42 degrees .

Priest Hot Spring is slightly acidic and relieves tired muscles aches and pains and was named after a priest who has been crippled from arthritis but healed after bathing in the waters in 1878

Rachel Hot Spring is alkaline and nourishes the skin

We spent a lovely couple of hours relaxing in these hot springs - such a treat !

Hobbits and stitches in mouth

Started my day in Auckland and had flown in the night before from Brisbane. That morning while working out in the gym I managed to smash a 6kg ball into my jaw putting my top teeth through my bottom lip right through to below my lip. Yep it really hurt and bled a lot!!

Leanne and her daughter picked us up from the hotel to drive us back to Rotorau for the next few days for the conference. They wanted to show us the local sights so had organised 2 days of sight seeing.

New Zealand really is stunning and so green with rolling hills. We stopped off at Matamata to visit the Hobbit ton movie set. Tickets were $70 each for the 2 hour tour.

Scouts found this great sheep/cattle property for the filming of the Lord of The Rings and then the NZ army needed to build a 1.5 km road into the site so they could access the site easily for filming. The Hobbit trilogies were also filmed here.

A total of 39 hobbit homes were created. All looked lived in with washing on the lines and picnics on the garden tables. A massive artificial tree overlooks Bag End. The tour ended with a cider at the thatched Green Dragon Inn warming ourselves by the roaring fire. It was the coolest rustic tavern

Once we arrived in Rotorua I went to the emergency room to get a couple of stitches inside my mouth and a glue stitch on the outside below my bottom lip. Dinner was via a straw! Our hotel is lovely and overlooks the large lake. It has the sulphur smell in places with spa tubs built over natural hot springs.

Day in Ubud

Caught a bus just down the road from the hostel to Ubud for $15 return that took about 2- 3 hours to get there. Once there I found a moto drive to take me to the restaurant there that a friend had recommended called Clear Cafe

After lunch my moto driver came back and took me out to the Rice Terraces. Below are photos taken from the back of the motorbike

I wandered around the stalls at the top of the Tegallalang rice terraces but didn't go down the hill to the other side as it was so hot.

Shopping in Seminyak and Potato Head Club

Did most of the shopping locally but found out about a cool shop selling bags at Seminyak. I started walking down there but it ended up being a very long way and after an hour I got a motorbike to take me to it. It was opposite Potato Head Beach Club that I had heard lots about so I popped in to have a look. The building had security guards and the outside was made of old lourvered windows. It looked amazing!

Work shopping trip

Flew in Virgin into Kuta beach arriving in the afternoon to smash out a couple of days of shopping to take back for fundraising. Stayed at this hostel last year and it is centrally located and very nice.
