Surabaya

LMS Hotel, Surabaya - Friday 29/12/78 - sunny

When we woke up Brad went to Denpasar to pick up the film while I packed. We had breakfast of banana on toast at the Beer Garden and then did last minute shopping. At 11.30 Les, Peter, Sally, Tony, Brad and I caught a bemo to the airport. We had to pay 800 rp to leave Bali. Our plane was supposed to leave at 12.30 but we left at about 1.45. We are flying Merpati and it was a little yucky plane. I was glad when our 45 minute flight was over. Our tickets cost us 10,000 rp each.

At Surabaya as taxis were so expensive, we walked 1 km up the main road and waited until a bemo came. The only one that came was a 3-wheeler. After 6 of us piled in and all our baggage it nearly touched the ceiling. It was so crowded it was hilarious. Everyone was laughing at us. Surabaya is a big city with lots of traffic. Most of the streets are one way and have about six lanes of disorganised traffic. We dropped everyone off at the Bamboo Den and then we were dropped at the LMS hotel which is really posh. We were supposed to get a non-air conditioned room worth 6000 rp but we got a lux room worth 15000 rp. They are gorgeous rooms. We caught a taxi to the Bamboo Den and then we all caught a becak between two back to the LMS. A becak is a padded seat with canopy pushed by a pushbike. It is great. We went to dinner at Bibi and Baba and I had sate ayam which was OK. We then went to the bar for our welcome drink and then to bed. The beds were so soft.
