Ubud

Mandala Bungalows Pliatin - Friday 22/12/78 - hot

We left Lovena Beach at 8 am and drove through Singaraja and up through this windy mountain road where there was a beautiful view over the northern coast. When we were descending we came across a lot of monkeys on the road. We drove through Bedugal which is on Lake Bratan. There is a tremendous amount of road work going on. They sit on the side of roads smashing boulders into smaller rocks which are then all laid out. There are a lot of women working on the roads. At Mengivi we turned off to go to Ubud and was it a terrible road. There were a lot of intersections with no signs so we yelled out Ubud and were pointed on the road.

We were very tired and sore when we arrived at Mandala. We had a sleep and then went to Mum's for lunch. We went to a cockfight up the road. No Balinese women are allowed to watch, but they will tolerate western women. There is a square ring with everyone around it. All the men with birds sit in the middle and decide which cock will fight. When they’ve decided they tie the spurs on then the betting starts. Everyone is yelling out while the trainers start to get their birds angry. The ruffle their feathers and put their finger up their bums and each bird is allowed to peck the other on the head. Then everyone is silent and the birds are let go and the first clash is the best. They then fight until one dies and if one becomes chicken they are put back to back in a basket. It is very exciting. For dinner we went to Murni’s and ate bimpia (spring rolls) and sweet and sour pork.
