Coconut Grove Hotel, Sanur - Friday 8/12/78 - sunny and very hot

We woke up at about 7 am, had a shower and went to get some breakfast. We had pawpaw and a cheese jaffle each. At 9 am we met Maria and caught a bemo into Denpasar. It was still a mad ride but much safer than on a motorbike. Also trying to cross a road you are putting your life at risk. We went to the markets which were lots of little alleys crammed full of lots of stores. It was really cheap and lots of nice things. I bought a batik dress for 2000 rup and some batik for 1800 rup. We went to a little café for a drink and then into a shop full of carvings. The Balinese are so clever and their woodwork is really great. Brad bought a beautiful big wood carving and I bought lots of smaller ones.

We then went back into the market which was so incredibly hot as there is no ventilation. People walk along the streets with carvings and other goods and bargain with you. I bought a pair of sandals for 950 rup and Brad bought a pair for Maria. We then caught a bemo back to Denpasar. Maria has a friend who sews clothes so Brad gave her some batik to make him a shirt.

We then went to Kuta Beach on the bike. The sky was really black and it started to rain soon after we got there. We went to the beach which is really nice. There are tons of Australians and hippies at Kuta Beach. All these Balinese chase you along the beach with clothes and jewellery to buy. I ended up buying a nice silver chain for 1000 rup. We went to a bar in a posh hotel and had a cold drink. We then looked at some more clothes shops and then went to get something to eat. We had fried bananas for 100 rup.

When we got back to Coconut Grove Maria had Brad's shirt which is really well made. We gave her some more material to make Brad another shirt and me a dress. It is 1000 rup for a shirt and 1500 rup for a dress. Brad and I are eventually getting better with our Balinese. We then got dressed to go out for dinner. We went to a very nice restaurant down the road. It is outdoors with lovely cane furniture. The waitresses are all dressed in traditional dress with sarong and kelaya and all have such little waists. Then there was Balinese music which consists of about 20 boys hitting on wooden blocks. There were boys and girls doing Balinese dancing. For dinner we had sweet and sour pork for 4000 rup. We left at about 8 pm. At about 7 pm I am really tired and go to bed.
