A Travellerspoint blog

This town is in so many movies!!!

I was going to Chicago to work at the merchandise mart for a week & they were paying for my ticket. I asked them if I could go a few days early and went up with Dad who was visiting from Australia & Nick who was 10 at the time. Mum stayed in Denver looking after the rest of the family.

We flew on different airlines & met up in Chicago airport where we caught the train into the city. We were staying at the youth hostel which was huge. we had a family room with 3 bedrooms & a massive living area. It is located in downtown Chicago , not far from Lake Michigan & walking distance to everything.

We did end up doing lots of walking as there is lots to see & it is fairly spread out. It is a great city to walk around & you recognise scenes & buildings from so many movies -- Richie Rich building, the iron bridges over the Chicago River - My best Friends Wedding etc

We soon established our favourite eating places. Breakfast was at this great typical american dine which had the thickest yummiest french toast with bacon & eggs & maple syrup...sooo good! Dinner was a Chinese restaurant nearby where Nick loved to order duck with no veggies if course.

We traversed many blocks up to the Chicago River, Navy Pier, Michigan Mile, Sears tower ( now Willis Tower), Fields Natural History Museum & of course shopping at Ross 7TJ Max. Nick is great shopper & he made me buy so much stuff!!!! I had to buy another bag to send home with him on the plane.

Some place we went with Dad & other times Dad went by himself to visit the art museums that he so loved. We all wandered around Navy Pier that has so much in the way of restaurants & entertainment.

Nick loved the natural History Museum especially because the lions from Africa that the film the Ghosts in the Darkness was made about were stuffed & on display there. We also had a fun morning at Disney Quest where there were lots of simulated rides like a roller-coaster that were heaps of fun.

Another day Nick & I rented bicycles & rode along The northern shores of Lake Michigan , past lots of beach volleyball courts full of people outside enjoying the beautiful weather. It is much colder here in Winter.

Another day we went up 103 floors to the viewing tower a the top of the Sears Building that was the tallest budding in the world up until 1986. It had great views over the city & lake.

We filled in our 3 days very easily & loved this beautiful city.

Nick & Dad flew back to Denver together leaving me to work the next week at the Merchandise Mart
