Giant Redwoods & Dead Whale

The scenery remained stunning but was less rugged & more majestic in its bigness of the road hugging huge headlands & sweeping across big gorges with snow capped mountains in the background.

Soon after crossing the border we came into the Redwood & Sequoia Forests. Standing in the middle of these forests looking up at the immense size of these trees & knowing how old they were was amazing. Some of them were 2000 years old!!!. They were up to 370 feet ( 112m) weighed 1200 tonnes & had a base diameter of 22 ft ( 6.7m) Sequoias were even bigger. Near Klamath we did the tourist thing of going through the " Drive Through Tree" – a tree big enough when hollowed out for a car to fit through! We stopped off at different places to see the Grandfather Tree & other huge old ones!

We stopped at Crescent City which had been hit by a Tsunami about 100 years ago but the worst account of a tsunami was in the 1700's when a 50 foot wave hit the Oregon coast 20 minutes after an earthquake & wiped out Indian villages.

At one place , where the road was high above the beach below we could see a huge mass & some people. We stopped to see what it was & it was a massive dead whale.
