Portland - green, rainy & pretty

The next day we crossed to border into Oregon after the town of Yreka – lots of mountains, lakes & beautiful scenery. We drove through Oregon towns of Eugene & Salem & made our way to their home. So good to see them again!!!

Our 10 days in Portland was filled very quickly. Within a few days of our arrival an oppoprtunity to move back to Australia to the Gold Coast arose which they excitedly took . They ended up leaving the country before us & we dropped them to the airport about 10 days later!! In between helping them pack & sell furniture we did some sightseeing.

The weather was cold, rainy & misty. Oregon is not green without good reason. It always rains & we saw blue sky briefly only a couple of times!!!

We drove to Mt Hood, a couple of hours away to do some snowboarding & skiing & had a great day. The sun was even out that day!! One of the prettiest day trip we did was to drive along the Columbia River Gorge Rd, which forms a natural border with Washington State, then drive over to Washington & follow the river back on that side. The scenery was stunning, with lots of waterfalls .

One of the most beautiful was Multnomah Falls. It rises to a height of 189m & is the country's second tallest waterfall. Even with being in Winter & the leaves still off the trees this area was stunning.

This area was the end of the famous " Oregon Trail" that hundreds of people used to trek from the east coast to settle out in the west. One famous landmark on the trail was “ Beacon Rock”. It had been named by explorers Lewis & Clark in 1805 & signalled for the pioneers the nearing of the end of their journey.

Another lovely nearby town was Oregon City which had the wide Willamette Falls that powered lumber & paper mills. These towns were full of quaint old style homes.

A visit to America could not hapen without visiting my favourite restaurant - " Cheesecake Factory" at least a couple of times. I had my favourite Chinese Chopped Chicken Salad & Bang Bang Chicken & Shrimp. Love their food!!!

Another day trip took us to Astoria on the coast not far from the Washington border. After dropping Adam & Kristina to the airport we had about 8 days to drive the coast from here to Los Angeles where we were flying out from.
