Camping in the grounds of an old stone gaol

After 2 weeks at Crescent Head we we going to take our time heading back north to Brisbane testing out the van with short stays,

We didn't get far the first day arriving at Trial Bay just after 10am where we paid $80 a night for an unpowered store on the bay front!! The prices had just gone up for December holidays period. It is a national parks campground around an old stone gaol. The gaol was built to house prisoners who were brought to the area in 1886 to construct a breakwater to make Trial Bay a safe harbour halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. Then, during World War 1 the gaol was used once again, this time as an internment camp for local German residents who were suspected (almost always falsely) to be conspiring with the enemy. It hasn’t been used as an active gaol since, and is now an historic ruin. The view from our site was beautiful overlooking the bay up to South West Rocks.

It was a very windy day and not nice for beach or paddle boarding. Instead we did a hike around the Arakoon National Park to Little Bay heading south toward Smoky Cape. We went past a couple of lovely beaches with lots of kangaroos.
