A Travellerspoint blog

Sorry Vienna you are beautiful!

As are needed to relax we didn't leave the hostel until midday and spent the morning washing, and pottering which was nice!

We ended up touring the major sights of Vienna in 5 hours and it really is a beautiful stunning city with incredible majestic buildings, churches, statues and fountains. Unlike every else we stayed we need to use their excellent public transport system to save our feet and it was very easy. The metro is so easy and we never needed to wait more than 3 minute for trains and the trams were also excellent. So I am sorry Vienna for not liking you yesterday on my tired day ...you are lovely!!

We went first ever to the station and I love their information and ticketing offices that are so helpful and make it very easy to book travel. We bought combination ticket for tomorrow to visit the Wachau valley along the Danube. It cost 53 E and includes return train travel, boat ride up the Danube and an Abbey visit. Times of our travel are flexible and up to us.

We then headed to Schonbrunn Palace on a tram that inly took 10 minutes. Entry around the extensive grounds is free. It is a HUGE palace from the front and we then wandered to the side to see the lovely rose gardens and wandered amongst the high mazed hedges...... all very beautiful. We then turned a corner and literally gasped to see what was at the back of the house - Double rowed massive manicured garden beds lined with statues leading up to the hugest statues and fountains and behind it high on the hill is the "Gloriette" viewing terrace" with views over the entire city. It actually was unbelievable !!

Next we caught the metro to Karlsplatz where we ate our pre packed lunch in a lovely shady park. We went into the church next door which was so beautiful built in the Byzantine style. It cost 8 E to go inside . Building started in 1716 to commemorate the 8000 who died in the plague of 1714 and completed 20 years later.

We caught an elevator and walked up stairs that took you inside the dome and so close to all the paintings inside the dome inside

Next past the impressive opera house that Vienna is famous for Paid 70 c inside a station to go to the loo and it was an opera loo playing famous well known songs!

Back on a the metro to Stephanplatz and looked inside St Stephens Cathedral. - has a colourful mosaic tile roof. Walked along the interesting street called Graben which is like a long square full off memorial statues and cafes and the coffee shops that Vienna is famous for.

At the end of the Graben we turned left and walked up to Michaelerplatz and Hofburg Palace the many hours and carriages were outside. Another stunning building that was home to the Hapsburg dynasty for over 600 years. it now houses several museums as well as the Lipizzaner horses and Spanish riding school. Mum enquired about attending show but it was booked out until the 10th June. At the front were excavated roman ruins from the 1st - 4th century showing their homes that even had heating under the floors. They were quite brilliant.

We walked along the cobblestoned road under the place and came out at Heldenpaltz another massive open square surrounded by immense buildings and statues.

Opposite were 2 of the massive museums with interesting manicured rounded hedges. We walked down the Inner ring Road past the impressive Parliament building to the Rat house ( Town Hall) which with its high gothic spires of 102 metres can be seen from all over town ( built 1872). There are no other buildings taller than it.

We then found the underground and only had to change lines once and we were back at our home stain of Westbahnhoff and walked 50 metres to the hostel, stopping at the supermarket next door to buy more breakfast and lunch supplies for tomorrow.

Went out for dinner at a local restaurant that was from 1890's and had Viener Schnitzel and potato salad for dinner
