Relaxing by the river in lovely Ljubljana

Headed out at 7.30am by myself for a lovely walk around this village and Lake Bled while it was still nice and quiet. The church bells started ringing at 7am and I could see the church spire from our new room. A horse and cart went by and I went up to our supermarket over the road to buy some fresh bread rolls and their yummy walnut bread.

I will miss this lovely little village and lake - so much serenity and so nice to be in a village instead of a town. If I had stayed another day I would have booked in to do some white water rafting. Have found Slovenians to be really friendly and helpful.Took lots of photos of the local streets.

Mum and I went down to the lake just after 9am to catch a pletna boat to the island. The first one left from the hotel side of the lake at 9.30am and the oarsmen rows standing up. The awning covered boat can take up to 20 people. Cost 14 E

It took 20 minutes to row to the small island with its lovely church. Mum and I walked to the top where the church is and the around the island twice at the waters edge. We didn't bother to pay the 6 E to enter the church.

We went back on the electric boat to ensure we were back 11am. I bought Mum a Bled Cream cake before we left and she enjoyed it. The custard fillings light and fluffy and like a mousse.

I left Mum at the bus station and walked back the short distance to our hostel to collect our bags. at the bus station. We were approached by a shuttle that would only take 40 minutes to get to Lubjiana instead of 11/2 hour on the bus for only 6 E and we took it .We gave them our bus tickets that were valid for a month

We arrived into Ljubljiana bus station at midday and found our hostel very easily right on the pedestrianised riverfront – was a 20 minute walk. We could see the castle on the hill in front of us and then crossed the river over one of the attractive triple bridges. We immediately fell in love with this gorgeous bustling little riverfront city. Beautiful buildings line the riverfront and both sides of the sidewalk ate lined and full of people relaxing and drinking. Boats are going up and down the narrow stone lined river. We decided 1 night would not been enough so I walked back to the station and got another ticket to Belgrade leaving on Monday morning.

AdHoc Hostel is 200 years old and is on the main pedestrianised river front location. Perfect location! My room cost 16 E a night in an 8 bed dorm.

Since we arrived in Slovenia there have been no more onion shaped domes on the top of churches but we are back to elegant long spires. We have eaten lots of these while in Slovenia. Bureks – flaky pastry stuffed with meat, cheese or apple.

The city owes its architectural beauty to 2 earthquakes. The first in 1511 and then 1895. Our hostel is 200 years old and has a lovely wood paneled worn wooden staircase. We sat in a bar by the river outside our hostel and had a drink and tried a Tugo which was white wine, triple sec and fruit – very refreshing 4 E

We wandered along the river on our side through some interesting food markets where we bought several delicious yummy Italian sweets ( we are very close to Italy) and crossed over to the other side at the Dragon Bridge. The dragon is their national emblem. Both side s of the river was packed with people. In front of the triple bridge is a lovely salmon coloured church and square. They look over the river to the funicular going up the steep cliffs to the castle.

We then walked up to the castle – a very steep walk that required a few rests for Mum ! The view from the castle towers was beautiful overlooking the town. Castle entry was 7.50E Mum caught the funicular back down and I walked down one of the lovely paths through woods and beside old stone walls.

We decided to eat at a restaurant tonight and try some local Slovenian food. The restaurant was called Gujzina and in the alley behind the hostel.

We shared the following yummy food -

We had a meat goulash called Prekmurski Bograc – pork, beef, venison, potatoes, onion and garlic with Pecene Dodole ( potato cooked in flour) that were so yummy and trout (which is in the rivers and lakes here everywhere) with spinach and potato. We were excited to have some green veggies in this meat loving part of the world.

For dessert we had Prekmurska gibanica a traditional sweet dish from eastern Slovenia – dough with strudel, poppy seeds, walnuts, cottage cheese and apple which didn't taste as good as it looked. We were so full after eating so much food!!!
