Local bus and boat trip

After breakfast ( provided by the hostel) I walked around the local area in light drizzly rain. It was overcast for my whole week in Miami but you can see ho pretty it would be with nic weather.

My Bus/Boat tour left at 1pm around the corner from the hostel. Is at on the top deck of the double decker bus and you had to continually duck to avoid losing your head to low tree branches. The commentator sat up there also interjecting the city info with "DUCK"!

Miami is city of 4 million people and has 10 million visitors a year. It is very multi cultural with 67 % of the population speaking Spanish. Walking the streets of SOBE - short for South Beach you are hard pressed to hear people speak english. We drove around the beachfront Art Decor area mostly built between 1923 and 1943. The fanciful pastel buildings, with porthole windows, ship-like railings, sleek curves, glass blocks, shiny chrome, and gleaming terrazzo floors are prime eye candy.

We then headed off the the only true Island of South Beach, past the artificial islands either side and Miami Port which can dock 8 cruise ships at one time. There was 2 in at this time.

We want past the dense high-rise of Downtown Miami past the Vizcaya Home and gardens built by businessman James Deering (1859- 1925) – European inspired estate built in a time when Americas wealthiest industrialists created lavish homes inspired by the palaces of Europe.

Next door is Madonna's house. We then arrived in the area called Little Havana, the social , cultural centre for Cuban Americans.

In the few shopping blocks we hopped off to walk around there was expensive cuban cigar being hand rolled. in small corner park called Domino Park stay groups of elderly men playing g dominoes and over the road cool latino music from a bar. Once a year they hold the biggest street party with dancing and food with over a million people coming.

Back downtown we got off at Bayside the touristy shopping marine where our boat trip was leaving from . While waiting I bought a big Mohito from the Mohito Bar - a popular local drink made from Puerto Rican rum and this is all they sell. It cost $12 and you keep the glass.

Our Boat trip took about an hour and was very pleasant. It was still overcast but did not rain. We went past Venetian causeway built in 1913 across the Venetian Islands. We want around the many islands and Star Island where all the celebrities live is a gated island with security.

These are the celebrity homes that were pointed at to us: Jackie Chan

Hulk Hogan

John Travolta

Jennifer Lopez

Ricky Martin

Shakira

Alicia Keyes

Hugh Hefner

Egliasis

Usher

Anthonio Banderas

Will Smith

Dr who invented viagra

Shaquille O'Neill

David Beckham

These homes cost 20 - 47 million!

As we left Downtown on the bus it was dark and all the buildings were lit up and looked beautiful. We were back at SOBE by 7pm where I grabbed bite to eat for dinner
