Rode from Clyde to Omakau 41km

Went to the Athol St Intercity bus departure area and caught the 7.40am Dunedin bus to Clyde Arrived 9.10am and it was the nightmare bus driver who drove on windy mountain roads that has recomended speed of 65km an hour and he was driving at 95km an hour

Drove past waterfalls, gorges, and Lake Dunstan

Drove into Clyde a gorgeous liitle town with stone buildings beside a big dam

Met at the bus by Steve who has the shebikeshebikes business in the old Clyde railway station. Bike hire cost $43 a day with pannier = $344 + gel seat cover of $10

After checking our bikes were the right size, buying my first pair of padded bike pants for $80 ( best thing ever), getting our safety instructions we headed for around this little hamlet looking village in the lovely shops and old cottages with stone walls and beautiful flowering gardens (particularly roses). We bought some sandwiches from the general store and had decided to ride the slightly longer path along the river to Alexandra 12km rather than the rail trail 8 km. We crossed over the other side of the Clutha River and rode along a lovely shady undulating dirt path. We had picnic lunch around 11am after my chain had slipped off, glad Leigh knew how to fix that. The river is gurgling and green and wide and it is lined with willows.

Alexandra had some beautiful riverfront homes built into and on top of rocks. It is the largest town on the trail

We did a small detour to Shaky Bridge before heading out on the Rail Trail along the Manuherikia River. Backdrop is a mountain range with patches of snow on the tops

The first thing we noticed was how hard it was to ride on gravel especially when it was thick and on a slightly uphill gradient

Leaving town it looked like dry rocky wild west type scenery with beautiful big cottonwoods beside us along the banks of a pretty stream. It reminded me of Wyoming , rocky, prarie type hills and the cottonwoods. Past orchards, vineyards and farmland where merino sheep graze. Along the way there are red boxes with stamps to place in your Railway station stamp book. It was 7km to Galloway and then 10km to Chatto Creek where there was gorgeous old pub and gardens where we had a cold drink.

We had only seen seen 3 horse riders going the other way but at Chatto Crek there was several cyclists heading in the same direction as us,

Heading outhe last 12km was REALLY hard as the we had the wind against us and it was the steepest part of the day, and the entire trail We were averaging 7km an hour. It was hard slow going. Everyone passed us but we made it in 1 12/ hours . We were staying in cabins in the local campground. It was very small - just had 2 beds - $30 each ( already pre-paid with the bike package). The showers were $2 for 6 minutes

We rode 1km into town ( not a very interesting town) very small and went to the Commercial Hotel where we had booked lamb shanks for dinner

They were absolutely amazing and massive. We could only eat 1 each so we finished them off for breakfast. Dinner was $34. All the locals are very friendly
