Bike riding in Banff

After checking out of the hostel we drove down to the main street where we had seen a bike rental shop. We hired bikes for $26 for 2 hours or $36 the day. ( end up returning them after 2 hours) With a map and some rides recommended by the staff we head off. It was so cold - my hands and feet were numb, my eyes and nose were streaming. In the sun it was lovely but in the shade freezing.

We headed from the park on the Bow River out over the railroad tracks to the Vermilion Lakes. just out of town and by the highway. It was stunning with the water glistening in the sun, a bright blue sky and the bright yellow fall leaves. The 3 lakes are connected by marshland and beaver dams. We rode about 6km return and passed by group of students roller skiing 25km - really good exercise with short skis on wheels and poles.

We then rode back into town, over the river and up to Bow Falls and then to the Golf Course. where it was absolutely freezing and a really scary 10 km ride that left the safety of running alongside the golf course and did a loop through thick forest. I rang my bell continuously so as to warn any bears that we were around and that we wouldn't come around bend in the road and surprise them. So glad I didn't see a bear but saw squirrel and chipmunk , a deer and then heard howling close by and through the trees saw a wolf! That made me ride ever faster until we got back to civilisation!!

Back in Banff I had a picnic lunch by the river and thawed out my frozen feet.

After lunch we drove the 1 1/2 hours - 138 km to Calgary and dropped off the rental car at the airport. We were met by Madeline who drove us our hotel and then took us out for dinner to thi s beautiful wooden house restaurant in a park by the Bow River in the downtown area. I had duck for dinner . Was so tired and fell asleep at 8.30pm
