Lake Louise to Icefields Parkway - like WOW!!!!

To drive a 400km round trip,we left around 10am today and arrived back home at 6pm. It was a big day of driving and seeing the most incredible stretches of scenery I have seen. In front of me, in my rear view mirrors..... it was stunningly beautiful all day!

Our first stop - 25km from Banff - was Lake Louise with the massive famous Fairmont Hotel - "Chateau Lake Louise" Lake Louise is a famous glacial lake that is frozen from late October to June. The hotel sits opposite the Victoria Glacier that feeds into the opposite end of the lake.

The melting glacial silt makes the striking turquoise colour and keeps it so cold ( the water is only 10 degrees C in Summer !!!) I walked a 4km lakeside walk up to the glacial plain and it was totally serene and beautiful. I was keeping an eye out for bears when the trail got quieter, but all good.

Next stop was Moraine Lake in the Valley of the 10 peaks that was even more stunning. I climbed to top of the rock pile beside it for incredible mirrored views of the mountains in the still surface of the lake

On and on it went - one of most scenic drives in the world with over 100 visible glaciers, turquoise lakes, rushing waterfalls and picnic spots.

At the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre I paid $30 to catch a bus 10 minutes down the road to the Glacier skywalk - a glass cliff edge walk over canyon with waterfalls

Glass is all that separates you from 918 foot drop over the glacier formed valley and rushing waterfalls below. It was a surreal feeling and some people were really scared to walk over it

The Columbia Icefield is composed of 8 glaciers - some of which are retreating

Nearby was Weeping Wall created by melting snow that seeps through fine cracks in the vertical rock wall. It was vista after vista of beauty - simply breathtaking!!

After dinner I sat in the crisp cool air of the balcony of the timbered log hostel listening to the absolute serenity.

Overcast but Lake Louise is still beautiful
