Myanmar - love visiting a new country

Flew out of Phnom Penh for Bangkok at 10am. I stored my luggage in Suvarnabhumi airport and caught the free shuttle bus over to Don Muang airport. The ride was just under 1 hour. I checked in on Air Asia with just cabin luggage for the 2 hour flight to Rangon

Changed $150 USD at a money changers in the airport and received 184,600.00 K 1000 Kyat = $1.19 AUD

Went to the taxi counter and they told me it was 8000 kyat ( pronounced chet) for the 45 – 60 minute trip into town and led me outside and popped me in a taxi. Very easy and no haggling required.

My driver drove insanely fast, like fear for your life kind of driving. Once we got into town the traffic was so heavy that he couldn't drive fast, so I was pretty happy about that! Left Yangon airport around 5.45pm and got to the hostel at 6.30pm just on dark.

On the drive there was immediately many differences noticed.

The driver was driving on the right hand side of the car the same as we do in Australia but they drive on the right hand side instead of the left. Apparently this was to differentiate themselves from the Britsih after being a colony

Everone carries an umbrella - men and women

Men and women both wear a long sarong type skirt called a longyi which they tie slightly differently. Only a few men wear trousers.

There are no motorbikes in Yangon city - only in the provinces

Reminded me of India with a lot of very run down buildings, with a western feel with lots of signs in English

There was a big group of young people holding signs and shouting through a megaphone and the driver said they were collecting money for the flood victims from the cyclone last week

I arrived at the Four Rivers Hostel just on dark in a narrow one way street. Two lovely young young girls checked me . It cost around $20 USD a night and I hired a towel for $1. Paid 21,900 K

I am on the 3rd floor in a 10 bed mixed dorm. Comfy beds with a locker and privacy curtain around each bed as well as it's own lamp and power point - having these 3 things ,makes such a difference. I wandered a couple of blocks past many street vendors sellling all kinds of food. Would love to try it but don’t want to risk getting sick and found a general store and bought some bread and cheese for dinner as I was so exhausted and just wanted to go to bed. Cost 5,300 K

From when I landed my phone has had no service which I have never seen before. Not sure why
