Cascais - Beaches near Lisbon

Left hostel at. 930 after their yummy breakfasts of toast, crepes and fruit.

Wandered around some nearby town areas I hadn't been to yet. Avenida da liberdade is beautiful avenue with gardens and shady trees

Caught the funicular railway Elevador da Gloria ( 1888) up to a park and walked through Bairro Alto area.

Found an Apple store to buy a phone charging cord for 19 e as mine had died Went into Cathedral Se which was built in austere Romanesque style in 1150 to commemorate the end of Moorish rule. Wandered deserted post festival streets.

Walked to Cas do sode to catch the 1.40pm train to Cascais (45 mins 4.80 e return) and it was absolutely packed being a Sunday.

The railway followed the the coast around many calm beaches with sand full of people. Cascais was once an elegant summer retreat for Portuguese monarchy during 19 th century and safe haven for European royalty during the 2nd world war.

In Caiscais a pretty little village atmosphere where I found Queen Beach, a small beautiful beach nestled between the cliffs with calm seas that is discreet and hidden. Named because Queen Amelia bathed here during her royal visits.

Walked around coves through the elegant old town past the the Citadel ( military fortress) located on the right bank of the Tagus river.

Found a bike hire place for 8 E near the marina and cycled the path following the coast northwards. Passed so many beautiful sights: Santa Maria a beautiful creek/ inlet swimming in green water at the foot of a castle

Santa Martha lighthouse - blue and white stripes

Hells mouth - raging seas and waves send white foam metres high as it crashes into cliffs and caves

Guia lighthouse - brown and white

Fort Jorge de octavos -Built in cliffs between 1642 and 1648 with several canons

Guincho beach

Saw Roca cape the western most point of the European continent. It is 165 metres high and topped with a lighthouse built in 1758 and it's light reaches 48 km to sea.

Rode for a few hours and it was beautiful with much to see. Cimbed down a cliff pathway to a ricky ledge way below where people where swimming.

Back in Caiscais I bought from a stall a hot churro covered in sugar - absolutely decadent and yummy. Had dinner at a local buffet place for. 7.90 euro
