Lisbon is magnificent

Today was spent exploring this stunning city by bus and foot . Baxia is interesting for it's imposing buildings and squares. I started off on the Belem bus about 20 minutes way on the harbour front.

I got off to walk around the foreshore and visit these Seafarers monument. I was able to go to the top for 2 e (discounted with the yellow bus pass)

It was built on the waterfront as a monument to the discoveries that explorers made around the world. Henrique the navigator 1394 - 1460 was the most important figure associated with the age of discoveries having combined religious, political, scientific and economic goals

The sculptors shows all those that were involved the expeditions including the king, bishops, writers, navigators - including Vasco de Gama and looked like the helm of a ship.

The wind rose gift from South Africa in black and red limestone world map shows the chronology of Portuguese discovery and empire expansion.

Further along is the old stone Belem tower. Up the harbour I can see a massive bridge that looks just like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fran and it is called the 25th April Bridge. Behind that is massive statue of Jesus.

Across the road is the massive Monastery of Jeronimo and church. I went inside the church to look around.

Next I caught the Blue line bus : around parks and modern Lisbon which showed more attractive neighbourhoods and the more modern Lisbon.

Then it was the Number 28 bus that takes you up the hill to the castle and neighbourhoods of Alfama and Graca

The city has the harbour in front of it but is in a narrow valley surround by steep hills on 2 sides. The are a few elevador and elevators to save walking up the hills. This one -Elevador St Just is a nearby and an attractive wrought iron elevator from Bauxo to Square Largo Ocampi. Great view shown to the mosaic squares & streets below. I walked around Baxia which is interesting for it's imposing buildings and squares

On the opposite hill is Castelo de Jorge - pretty cool castle ruins with greta views. It cost 6 E instead of 10 with my discount from the yellow bus pass. It was built in the mid 11 th century during the moorish period.

Fiesta de Lisboa - all the streets are decorated ready for the party tonight. Every year in June the city celebrates the day if it's patron saint St Anthony with traditional and folk events. The cities most iconic neighbourhoods such as Alfama and Bairro Alto follow the age old tradition of partying and cooking sardines on street BBQ's with the festivities going over several days.

Neighbourhoods compete in the parade down Avenida da Liberdade with folk marches They started at 930 pm and finished at 1 am - and the streets were packed with families and young children. Then all night the partying continues in all neighbourhoods until 6 am
