Bridge over the River Kwai

On my way home from India I had a stopover in Bangkok and decided to spend the day on a day trip out to Kanchanaburi and see the River Kwai. I booked the trip for $35 from an agent near my hostel at Suk 11and then in my Bangkok wanderings I came across this shark fin restaurant.

It was an early pick up at 7.30am and I was told we would be back at 5pm. I had a flight that night so it was good way to fill in the day. I enjoyed the day and scenery but it was way too long with a lot of waiting and too much time spent at places.

We drove first in vans to the famous world war 2 bridge built by POWS under the Japanese who had invaded much of SE Asia. So many Aussie died building this railway through to Burma ( Myanmar)

In a shop near the bridge was a beautiful leopard lying asleep on a table beside his owner. He ws chained up and would most likely have been drugged which is sad. His coat was exquisite and he looked just like a big ol pussy cat and I so wanted to reach out and pat him but had to remind mysef he was not a cute old pussy cat!!!

Next stop was to the wartime cemetries full of hundreds of wartime graves of young soldiers most in their early twenties who sadly died here.

Then on to a floating restaurant on a fast flowing river where we helped ourselves to a buffet lunch. Groups were split up from the morning and off I headed to a waterfall which was a very pretty area with little stream & pools full of local Thai people. It was sooo hot that I coudn't resist just going and plonking myself down fully clothed ( like the locals do) and cool down. It was beautiful!!!!!

Next we boarded an old steam train that took us past some beautiful scenery high above a river and dense bamboo forests. It was fun hanging out the open door as we chugged along.

Then back in to vans for the 2 - 3 hour drive back and instead of getting back at 5pm it was 8.30pm!!! Nice day but ruined by how long it was - 11 hours!!! Could have been done in 4 - 5 hours less time as we did a lot of boring waiting around!!!!
