Ream Nat Park, new friends & getting buses fixed!

Caught a bus ( Sorya Bus – 4 ½ hours)to Sihanoukville for 4 days from Phnom Penh. Got off the bus & grabbed a moto as we drove to the beach area to find some accommodation. Just then the heavens opened & it bucketed down. I stopped to put on my rain poncho & the rain was so heavy that it sounded like hail on my helmet. My bag was getting saturated so stopped to buy another poncho to cover it.

Had a look at a guesthouse down the dirt road near Serendipity Beach & they had only 1 room left which was pretty isolated so I kept looking. After trying several more places that were booked I decided to treat myself to 1 night at Sokha Beach Resort. It wasn't cheap but just what I needed as I had been sick with sinusitis & just needed to curl up somewhere comfortable & sleep for awhile.

I made the most of their lovely private beach the next day lying under a coconut tree on a comfy lounge, walking on the beach & relaxing before checking out at midday. Off now to search for cheaper accommodation & found the Beach Club Resort 2 streets back from the beach for $25 a night & it had a pool. Perfect!

Lay around the pool for a bit & then decided I needed some exercise & rented a bicycle. It was a dodgy bike that kept slipping the chain on the uphill but got me over to the other side of the headland. It was a long ride up & down some monster hills. The hills up were huge & I would jump off half way up & walk the rest of the way up. The downhill was soooo good – great breeze to cool off !!!

Got to the other side & sat on the jetty overlooking the bay & decided I was too tired to ride home & would see if I could put the bike in a tuk tuk to take me back. I found 1 tuk tuk ( not many tourists in this part!!!) & they wanted a ridiculous price & I decided I would ride back. Made it & felt good for the exercise!

Booked a day trip to Ream National Park for tomorrow & sat o the beach with the multitudes ( fair amount of tourists but mostly locals) & watched the sun set over the water. Bought some new clothes at Zoco , had some dinner & back to my guesthouse.

Got picked up at 8am by a van to go on the day trip to the Ream Nat Park & dropped at a restaurant up the road to have some bread & fruit for breakfast. Only 6 of us on the trip – 2 couples, myself & a Canadian lady called Debbie who I hit it off with immediately. We drove the 18km in the van to the park & then hopped in a boat which took us up the river.

We moored at a jetty & walked across to the ocean side where we explored & had a swim. The water was so nice & refreshing. Deb spoke to someone that told her that a couple of days ago a western lady was lying on the Serendipity Beach by herself but in a crowded area & some local guys hit her on the head with a rock & ran off with her bag. Fortunately some westerners saw it & ran to her aid but were unable to identify her as she was unconscious. Apparently she had to be airlifted to Bangkok. Not cool!!!

After the swim we walked back to our boat & had a yummy lunch of fish & fruit on the jetty at Dolphin Station. We walked to a nearby fishing village that had about 10 homes & talked with some cute local kids. On the way back we went into a mangrove area where there was a boardwalk & climbed up the Mangrove Tower to look over the river.

It was a fun day & only cost $20 & we were dropped back to our guesthouses. Deb was dropped off first & I said I would come back on a moto & pick her up so we could watch the sunset on the beach & have dinner.

While on the beach I got my legs threaded by 2 cute girls for $6. They basically with sewing thread pluck out each individual hair. It took about 30 minutes & they were left feeling the same as if being waxed. We fought off the local sellers that swamp you on the beach but did buy some fruit & little bracelets.

We had dinner back at the guesthouse & Deb decided she needed some R & R before heading off to Vietnam & was coming to book in there tomorrow to laze around the pool. Deb was so inspiring & inspired me that I can in the future do a bigger trip on my own. She is travelling for 5 months on her own through Asia & had so many adventures & met so many great people. Got lots of great tips from her in travelling lightly & what kind of bag to buy ( wheeled one that can also be a backpack for stairs) & always have a silk sleep sheet for more dubious bedding.

We caught up again the next morning when she checked in & before I caught the bus back to Phnom Penh.

Had a very typical Cambodian experience as I waited for the bus to leave. It was stinking hot & the buses just leave from an empty parking area with no shade. The ticket office for Sorya was under an umbrella by the bus. Was waiting under the shade of a drink sellers umbrella & noticed the one of the bus tyres ( the front one right under my seat!!!) didn’t look right. Not flat flat but definitely not healthy. I got some Sorya bus guys & was pointing it out to them & when they didn’t get excited about my great observation & start to change the tyre I got more concerned. I was pointing at the tyre & saying " saat" as I pointed to the good tyres & “otay saat” as I pointed to the not good one. I thought I was saying “ good “ & “ not good” but found out later I was calling them tyres happy & sad!! Not quite correct but workable!!!

They still didn’t seemed motivated to action so I found some westen men & got them off the bus to check it out & they agreed it was a problem & FINALLY they decided to change the tyre asd I had cxreated quite the gathering around the bus wheel!! Better than an nasty accident I say!!! Made it back to PP safely ... Yah!!!

Was a great few days & felt inspired & refreshed.
