Beautiful Bruges

Early start - up at 4.30am - my lovely brother Stephen & his wife Michelle dropped me to the Birmingham airport 30 minutes away for a 6.25am flight on Brussels Airline. It was a quick 1 hour flight and I arrived at 8.25am ( Belgium time)

Got through immigration quickly & went down to the train station below the airport & caught a train for 7.80 E to Midi /South Station in the city where I then purchased a return ticket to Bruges for 14.80 E. The train left at 10.05am and was totally packed. It was only just over an hour long trip just stopping to let some people off at Ghent.

Once in Bruges I followed the directions I had printed off for Lybeer hostel. Only took 15 minutes to walk there, with hundreds of other tourists that had arrivied by train. Found my hostel & put my bag downstairs as I was too early to get a room.

All the streets are cobble stones & narrow & l Iove the Flemish style of biulding with a triangle on top with steps cut into the sides until it reaches the apex. They are narrow joined terrace houses & the churches and government buildings are very ornate.

Just wandered with my map but not really sure where I was or no plan on where I was heading. Found a canal boat ride trip so decided to do that first up.

Just want to say it was so cold alll day day & only reached a high of 12 dehrees. I really needed a warmer jacket than the one I was wearing!!

The boat ride was 7.60 E & took 30 minutes. The driver gave a commentary in english & was very amusing. He pointed out some houses that were for sale for 1 million euros!!!

Bruge is an old mediebval city that was very powerful in the 13th & 14th century & when the river silted up it's power waned as it was no longer an important shipping port.

Population of 20,00 within the old town city walls 17 churches and over 400 pubs It is only 18km from the coast

Passed at least 100 swans and one set of parents had 3 babies just born yesterday but 1 had died. Swans generally mate for life

High up over the canal there was a dog in the window of the building lying on the ledge. He is apparently tree every day.

Bought some fries and Belgian sausage & a waffle for lunch Wandering the streets it is evident why Belgium is famous for tapestries, lace, chocolate & beer

In the Market square which is surrounded with lovely buildings is the Belfry Tower. As always I am compelled to climb to the top of every tower!! Climbing the belfry tower cost 8E and had 366 steps. There was a long wait to start climbing but great views from the top. I was up there when the bells chimed and played a tune on the quarter hour. Next to it is Burg Square with impressive government buildings.

I hired a bike hire 4 E 1 hour from near the train station - rode along beautiful paths under tunnels of massive tress alongside the waterfront surrounding the old town. I went around to where there are 4 windmills left . There used to be hundreds. It is an incredibly beautiful city and I loved my day exploring here.

Back to hostel to check in & then went out for dinner just around the corner. Sharing an 8 bed dorm with 7 guys where to party - I think they will all be in late or very early tomorrow morning Dinner 19.20 E Pallieterke Rabbit cooked in beer & prunes with croquettes. Had a vanilla slice back at the hostel with a cuppa.

Nice day!
