Arrived in Greece!!!

Landed in Frankfurt in Germany at 5 am. The 10 1/2 hour flight was great as we both had 3 seats each! I slept for 6 hours, watched 2 movies and then we landed - felt really refreshed & great!!! We flew on the new airbus 380 & it was much quieter than other planes. I soon discovered I had made a big mistake not checking my luggage all the way through to Thessaloniki as I had to go out through immigration and collect my luggage but could not check in until 8.45am so I had to wait 2 hours. There was no where to sit near the check in counter so I just sat on the floor!

After checking in with Agean air I met Leigh in the lounge, had some nice food then boarded. Flying out of Frankfurt at 11am it was lovely and green with forests before we couldn't see anything because of the clouds. It was a great plane as it had screen showing exactly what we were flying over so as I passed over the alps of Austria, then Slovenia & down over Croatia to Greece. I knew what cities we were flying near from the screen.

We landed in at 2.30pm and didn't have to go through immigration as we had flown in from a Schengan country..... seemed strange not showing your passport!

We grabbed a taxi and for the 30 minute drive into town it cost 38 E( not cheap!) Our hotel is beautiful and in the best location just 1 block from the water and promenade. Downstars is a streetside cafe and the whole area is surrounded by cafes and cool bars, shops & people.

We headed out for a walk along the promenade down to the White Tower, an old 16 th century fortification. We wove back through narrow steets full of shops and trendy bars.

There are lots of stray dogs wandering around, many beggars, including very old people which was so sad.

The city of 1 million people is a young university town and we couldn't believe how many young peope we saw. Apparently there is 60 percent unemployment in the under 25's. At 6pm all along the riverfront the cafes were full of young people drinking coffees. They all eat very late.

There is a lovely big square just up from the hotel with buildings curving around the perimeter.

The city is in a bay and straight opposite across the bay is snow capped Mt Olympus. There is no high rise and the streets are narrow. The 6 story white apartment balconied high density living goes up the hillside.

We had some grilled prawns and calamari for dinner and headed home to bed -tiredness hit us quickly!!!
