Day 19 Ponferrada to Vega del Valcarce 41.1 km

Record today but was able to do so many miles because it was reasonably flat and I had mosly shade in the afternoon which made a huge difference.

Left about 6.30 am and arrived in at 3.30 pm so was a good 9 hours today. Walked out with 3 others and it was slow as signage was confusing and required us asking several locals. Once out of the city it was a lovely walk through several villages, vineyards and hills. Bought the best peaches and plums from a farm stall

Surrounding us are big mountains and will be hitting a steep uphill tomorrow . The village of Cacobelos was lovely and loved Villafranca del Bierzo. With a castle , monastery and church with a clear stream running through the town. Had my daily phone call from brother Stephen in England checking on me which I love!!!

I had some toast in an earlier village and grabbed some lunch here, before setting out to Trabedelo where I had paid 6 E for my bag to go to.

Walking mostly in shade with a rushing stream to my left and a road to my right I felt I could go further, so grabbed my backpack and kept walking another 6.8 km to Vega del Valcarce which is a cute litte hamlet in a valley with the Rio Valcarce stream going through it. It is just a 1 street town and has a 9th century castle on the hill high above it called Sarracin.

Feet are tired but still feel good after such a big day! Booked into municipal albergue for 6 e and sharing with 5 others, unlike last night with 50 of us in 1 room! Shared with 3 lovely USA girls and a guy from Gernany . We hung out talking tilll late
