Day 18 Rabanal to Ponferrada 37 km

Lovely change of scenery as we went up into the mountains. Left at 7.15 am today as I didn't want to miss the scenery in the dark as the sun isn't up till just before 8am.

Passed through the very cute stone houses in the village of Foncebadon.

At one of the high points past this is the well known cross or Cruz de Ferero at 1500 meters or 4,900 feet above sea level. It is is an iron cross on a timber pole surrounded with thousands of stones left here by pilgrims as they place a stone symbolic of something of their lives that they are leaving behind.

More downhill to the strange place of Manarin which is part shop / part religious articles. Up to another peak and then it was a brutal downhill for 10 km on slippery small stones. Had a bite to eat. In the lovely village of Acebo, passed through shady woods and then down to the town of Molinaseca which has a beautiful bridge over a clear stream and then a lovely narrow main cobblestones street full of bars.

I beat my bag being delivered to an albergue on the road out of town ( bad position) and decided not to stay here but go on to Ponferrada about another 6 km. My bag cost 7 E to send here and arrived at 2 pm and I walked the last bit quite lost but eventually found some camino arrows ( very confusing when there are route options !) Arrived at the St Nicholas de Flue albergue which houses 210 pilgrims !!!! It is donation only and being the only one in town had a long line that took me 40 mins until it was my turn to register. My left ankle is quite sore and I am limping on it. Think I might have twisted it on that long downhill.

Incredible Templar castle in town from the 12 th century with turrets and a moat.
