Day 5 Puente La Reinta to Villamayor 32 km

This was one of my favorite days so far as I walked 32 km with NO blisters, passed through beautiful villages and countryside and slept in the town square that night!

Walked from 6.45am to 3pm and first passed through a cute village called Maneru . The town square was filled with streamers and rubbish and apparently the all night fiesta town party only finished at 7am just before I got there.

Next was one of my favs - Cirauqui- the approach to ths village which was perched high on a hill was beautiful. Leaving the village we walked over a 2000 year old roman road and bridge.

Passing through regular villages makes it easy to stop and rest awhile, fill up your water bottle at the town Fuentes ( fountain) and means you don't have to carry too much water on you . After a couple more villages I arrived in Estella a town of 15,000 and decided I felt ok to walk another 10 km. Said goodbye to Donna and Warren and Texan Mike ( never did bump into them again)

Leaving town I saw no othe pilgrims for many miles and then bumped into the Singaporeans at the Fuentes de vino - free red wine fountain. I tried some red wine..... still don't like it and then for the 2nd time today walked off without my poles and then had to backtrack - very silly adding extra miles on my feet !! Poles are essential and make a huge difference walking up and down hills.

Lovely countryside and 1 more village to pass through which was deserted because of siesta. Approaching the village was stunning, seeing the church spire getting closer and high above was a castle on the mountain above it. Tiny village with 1 albergue and population of 150. At the entrance of the town were 4 children around 10 years of age with a table set up selling stones for 50 c - so I bought one to support their entrepreneurship and they also gave me some mulberries.

As I approached the albergue I saw the dreaded sign of completo meaning it was full. It was run by Dutch Christians who were so kind but said I couldn't even sleep on the floor as there was already 2 people doing that. They suggested going on to Los Arcos which was another 12 km and there was no way I could walk that far. I told them how far I had already walked and they said I could sleep in the town square with 2 other women and they would give me a mat, so town square it was !! Paid 2 E for a shower and then hung out at the front of the albergue which is a beautiful 400 year old building with big low beams and overlooks the town square with fuentes and a bar selling food.

Had a pilgrims meal at the bar with the polish girl and mum who are also sleeping outside and the Singaporeans. Watched the town children running around with a bulls head on wheels playing a game of dodging the bull.

At 8.30 pm I went to the albergue for their devotions which was lovely with music and scripture. It was windy and cold outside so I braved it leaving the lovely meditation room to sleep outside in the cold. Another 2 men had arrived so there was now 5. I put on everything I owned and crawled in my thin mummy liner and rain poncho and hid my upper body under my rain jacket. The bar closed at 10 pm and went to keep sometime after that but woke up really cold at 2am and slept on and off after that hearing the church bells ring every half hour. Had a pilgrim adventure!!!
