Train from Paris to Bayonne

Arrived in Paris at 7am and had a scary moment at the baggage carousel waiting for my luggage for 45 minutes and mine was the last bag to come out! As the crowds got thinner and the bags less I had my moment of "what happens if it doesn't come out??? Very happy to see my red deuter backpack on the carousel !

Caught a shuttle train to terminal 2 where the SCNF station (Gare) is located. Saw there was an 8.15 train to Bordeaux St Jean which was half an hour away. Made enquiries if could change my 10.15am departure for an earlier time and I could but the line was so long I wouldn't have had time. They had free wifi there so passed the couple of hours until 10.15 am when my 4 hour journey began to Bordeaux. I had booked my ticket in Australia for 96 E -$140 AUD

Had 2 hours in Bordeaux before the train left to Bayonne so walked 20 minutes up to Centreville where there was a square and massive arch leading into the narrow streets of old town.

The train stations are such beautiful buildings with big clocks. Sat at a cafe opposite having a coke and yummy jambon ( ham on a baguette)

Fading fast the last 2 hours to Bayonne as been awake for many hours now. Saw a couple of other pilgrims get off at the station. My hotel I had booked is straight opposite the station -perfect location! Found out the times the train leaves tomorrow for St Jean Pied du Port and checked in to my very small but nothing wrong with it room which cost 75 e about $90

Such a surreal feel as I walked around Bayonne - just one of the town names I had read about the last 8 months as I had read numerous blogs for my research on what to expect as I did the Camino. Now I am here.....such a cool feeling!

Just 100 meters away is the river so I walked over the flag lined bridge to the old town. Such a pretty town with a big citadelle on wooded hills behind the station and many bridges over the confluence of the 2 rivers it straddles. Pretty tired do just did a quick loop and got some take away next door to the hotel. They spoke no English so I ordered chicken and chips but ended up getting some chicken Burger which was indelible 7.5 E -. So just ate the fries. I was sitting out on the footpath and could hear the lady who took my order yelling and I thought she was speaking to this other guy working there. This went on for ages before I turned around to discover she was yelling at me to find out what sauce I wanted. Pretty funny as you just tune out when you can't understand another language! Early night for me and lights out by 9pm just as it got dark.
