24 hours in St Louis

Had 24 hours in St Louis Missouri to visit Joyce Meyer Ministries on Friday, after leaving Nashville and before going to Denver We were staying at the Holiday Inn Express nearer airport and arrived in at 3pm. Had googled things to do in St Louis and saw that the Delmar Loop was a cool neighborhood.

We caught the free shuttle to the airport and then the metro link train. A day pass to use on buses and trains cost $7.50.Leigh got off at the Delmar Loop station and I kept going to the Arch- Laclede Landing station on the Mississippi River.

St Louis was the gateway to the west and makes me want to read accounts of the pioneers heading west in their covered wagons. This was their last major town as they headed west. I walked through a pretty wooded park along the riverside to reach the arch.

I paid $10 for my ticket to the top. It was 5pm and so the lines were shorter and I was up & down in 45 minutes from when I got in the first line.

It is the nations tallest monument reaching 630 feet and you go up in little cubicle trams that go up vertically as well as obliquely in groups of 6. They have 8 that go up at the same time at both sides of the arch.

On one side is the Missisisippi Bridge looking over into Illinois with the first major bridge over it called Eads Bridge and it was famous in its time for being the first in the Cantilever style (just like our story Bridge in Brisbane).

On the other side is the city and Old Courthouse. The arch definitely enhances the city and makes the riverfront more interesting.

I wandered on the other side of Arch Metrolink station around an old area which is 180 years old called Lacledes Landing with cobblestoned streets, ornate gas streetlamps and fun atmosphere with lots of outdoor bars and eateries.

Caught the train back to Delmar Loop and crossed the street to catch the bus to the restaurant area as we had beenadvised. We had been told to go right on exiting the station and NOT left as it was not a safe area. It did not feel safe right here at the station!!!

Got the bus a few blocks down to Blueberry Hill Restaurant where apparently Chuck Berry still plays once a month. Filled with lots of animal heads & traditional American food. Couldn't find Leigh there so called her and she had already left as she hated it and didn’t feel safe. I had a quick meal at a Thai restaurant and walked back to the station.

The last few blocks did not feel great at all. Glad there was a security guard at the station as there was lot of loitering boys who were a bit scary. More scary people on the train – so many people looked totally off their faces on drugs( on the train & in the streets). Glad to get back to the airport and catch the shuttle bus back to the the hotel.

Next day we were able to visit Joyce Meyer Ministries headquarters and have a tour of their faciities which was inspiring to see the reach across the world and what they do making a difference in countries all across the world. Dropped to the airport for a flight to Denver.

The flight was overbooked so they called for volunteers to be bumped and reimbursed with flight credit, so I did it and and catching a flight 2 hours later and get $400 of credit to be used within the next year. Leigh left for Phoenix and we meet up in 10 days time in Denver.
