First time in a mixed dorm!

Sunday 16th Aug

Left Siem Reap Cambodia at 1pm & arrived in Singapore at 4pm. Caught the MRT train from the airport to Bugis station changing at Tanah Merah – cost $2.60 but can get a $1 refund when I hand the card back.

Wandered around with my map looking for the youth hostel that had been recommended & it had closed!!! Had 2 suitcases full of stock to go back to Australia had to drag them around. So armed with my map walked to option number 2 in Little India district. Footpaths were narrow & uneven in here so had to walk on the road. Option number 2 full!!! They recommended another one around the corner – Footprints Backpacker Hostel in Perak St. Yay.. got a bed!!!! Cost me $18 + $20 deposit to hire a sheet & pillow case.( will get the $20 back on leaving when I hand them in) Another $4 to hire a towel. Girls dorm was full so in a mixed dorm – 12 beds – got up there & all the bottom bunks taken so I am on the top bunk. Set myself up & realized I would freeze to death as straight opposite the aircon & was already cold so moved bunks. Took me awhile to situate myself with locks & lockers etc!!!

Next door is the church of the True Light - could hear loud singing so popped in for a look. Was a very energetic happy Indian church. Place I am staying is Christian & play worship music in the cafe

Headed out for a wander & the roads are FULL of Indian men ( like hundreds of them , but no women) Not even many westerners around considering there are about 4 hostels in this area. I seriously could be in India – people, food, street markets, smells – very cool!!!

Has cute little buildings – love the architecture of the lane ways. Looked around for somewhere to have dinner & coukd not find one hole in the wall place/stret cfes that had a wesdterner in it! Decided to be brave & venture into a hole in the wall place & order – got vegetable biriyani & rota bread. It was a massive amount of food & served on a banana leaf. I ate about 1/3 of it & sat on a plastic stool in this little place where they were cooking right next to me. Loved the rota – like a fuffy pancake/bread. Food was $3.50 & a big water $1.

Excited that I had navigated it all in preparation for travelling through China which will not be as simple as here.

Off to bed & read now – not sure when lights can be turned off – still so much to discover!!
