Island Day

Slept in and lay around for awhile as the boat to Hvar Island doesn't leave till 11.30am Return ticket is 94 kuna each ($16) and we are catching the catamaran over which takes 1 hour and ferry back at 5.30pm ferry which takes 2 hours.

Hvar Island grows lots of lavendar in the interior but it had all been harvested as I would have loved to have seen the fields in bloom. Mum bought some as she read it can be used as a mossie repellant.

Hvar Town where we arrived is lovely and has a big Venetian fortress from 1551 on the hill overlooking the town. We got some lunch and I fed most of mine to a stray hungry kitten ( they are in every town and make me miss my cat Charlie!!!). The streets are made of marble cobble stones.

We were going to hire bikes but they only had boy style ones which Mum couldn’t get her leg over so she wandered around and found somewhere nice to read her book while I went for a bike ride. I rode as far as I could along the coast in both directions and found so many lovely little beaches, rocky inlets for swimming and lounge beds dotted on the rocky outcrops. Again it was just so beautiful and the water amazing. I had a dip and sat and read my book for awhile for going back to meet Mum. We had another cold drink and read our books before catching the bus ( 25 kuna) to the other side of the island to the port of Stari Grad where we were catching the big Jadrolinja car ferry back from.

This ferry is huge and unlike the other boats we had caught you could sit on the top deck in the open which was lovely and we saw a beautiful sunset as we made our way back to Split. Once the sun was down it was a bit windy and cool so we sat on the next level down that was very comfortable with big couches and a cafeteria.

Sat and had diner at he most beautiful place – sitting beside the floodlit ruins of roman walls, the cathedral and bell tower. As we finished eating the bells started ringing which was lovely. Watched a DVD before bed and have the room to ourselves tonight as it is coming into low season.
