Rainy Day getting to Rijek

Left the hostel for the bus station around 9am and booked ourselves on the 10.30am bus to Rejik - a 5 hour bus trip for 170 kuna ( just under $30). We had hoped to get a boat from here to Pula but it wasn't running on the day we needed so we decided to bus it north in 2 stages, breaking tonight at Rejik and then catching a boat back to Zadar from Pula on Wednesday. We will then have a chance to have a look around Zadar some more then.

Craotia's coastline is mountainous, rugged, rocky and very beautiful with big mountains running down into the water and the road running right on the edge and following the coastline.

It was a slow trip as it was a narrow road with hairpin turns, sometimes up high , sometimes the water just a few metres from you but always on the coast. Nestled in inlets were homes and fishing villages that had their front door literally 2 metres from the water and their little boat moored out the front. There were very few towns for the first couple of hours and then we passed some small ones as we got further north.

It rained for the last few hours but was still beautiful. The sun came out just as we arrived in Rijek...yay!!!! This is a bustling port town with many ships and marinas. We caught a bus to the hostel for 10 kuna. It was only 2 km from the town centre and over the road from the water. It's a beautiful old big renovated villa and we are on the 2nd floor. We ended up getting the 6 bed dorm to ourselves much to my Mum's delight!!!! Cost 149 kana $ 27 ) for the night and it is at Pecine.

After making up our beds we headed out with our maps back to the City centre and caught the number 2 bus up to Trsat which has an old castle/fortress and park perched on a hill overlooking the town and harbour. It also overlooked some islands - there are around 1100 islands off Croatia. There was a cafe in the castle overlooking the big bay so we sat up there and watched the sun make its way down over the water and had a cold drink and enjoyed the view. We then had a wander around this very prettty cute neighbourhood with lots of restaurants and bars that had a very local feel to it.The temperature has dropped so I needed to wear my sweater for the first time.

Caught the bus back down to the town just as it was getting dark and wandered around their pedestrian mall - the Korzo. I grabbed some takeaway Croatian meat pie in flaky pastry which was ok and Mum had seafood at a nice restaurant ( I wasn't very hungry and just wanted a snack) Probably ate too much junk on the bus trip. There were many cool out door bars but we had to search hard to find anywhere that served food...very strange !!
