Exploring Venice by foot and boat

Lazy start to the day...got up at 10am after waking at 8am to the sound of church bells and seagulls. Then a neighbour across the alley put on their TV and I could hear it like it was in my room. Below I hear the sounds of people walking down the street and pulling trolleys. There are no cars or bicycles allowed because it is so small and narrow and everything gets wheeled in and out.

Have been catching up only blogs and am now up to date...yay!! Left it too long before starting this trip. Clock just struck 10am so time to get dressed and go out and get that Nathan boy out of bed.

Just returned from walking for 4 hours and it is SOOOOOO hot!!! We wandered fairly lost in t morning trying to make our way to St Marks Square, but it was the nice just wandering, discovering beautiful places kinda lost.

Venice is just amazing , just alley after alley and you turn a corner and there is a massive church or a small or large campo with little eateries and benches with people sitting out enjoying themselves.

We saw a bride and her father arrive at this huge church with a couple of hundred people waiting by gondola....pretty cool.

We ended up out at one of the big canals and saw a huge greek cruise ship arriving.. we walked back to the Grand Canal and crossed over the Ponte Dell Accademia ( Bridge) The view from this bridge is a well known view and bustling with water traffic below.

We knew we were nearly at Piazza San Marco (St Marks Square) because the number of people were increasing and so were the very expensive designer shops. There are so many shops selling the famous Venetian masks and Murano glass.

The square is huge and near the centre is the church in a byzantine design with 5 cupolas.

I went to the top of the tower by elevator for 8 euro for view over Venice. In this bell tower at the bells started ring at 2pm as i was up there........so loud!!!

We passed many places with interesting sandwiches and nibbles and had a tuna and tomato sandwich for lunch. Life on the canals carries many boats - water taxis, gondolas and we even saw a water ambulance. We have found some helpful Italians when you ask for direction but many are just not interested in helping!!!

We went back to the room for a rest and Nath had a sleep We did some washing in the machine here and hung it out our windows Italian style!! That evening the hostel owner said we couldn't hang the washing out that window because you get a fine if washing is hanging out on a main street However we could hang it the other side of the building as it was a secondary street.

Mum and I went town to our local bar at 5pm for a coke and a beer and I loved sitting there reading my book.

After Nath joined us at 6.30pm we decided to catch a boat back to St Marks Square. The big boats are only 6.50 each way but so overcrowded, the gondolas cost 90 euro for 30 minutes , so we decide to catch our own water taxi for 60 euro for the 15 minutes to the square. Boats are everywhere and we had some close calls in looking like we would crash with other boats! It was just beautiful out there on the water with a breeze blowing and church bells ringing creating special moments in this crazy beautiful place.

The boat ride finished too soon and we walked along the waterfront watching 2 big ocean liners with their tugs going out to sea.

On the way home we picked up some food to eat in our local square again. All the children disappeared home when it got dark at 8pm. It is just so peaceful here, must be having no traffic noise.
