Monaco and lost passports...yep Nath!

Tried to hire the Velo Bleu local bikes that were everywhere for 1 euro a day but even though we had registered online we were unable to do it. Disappointing as we had really wanted to ride along the bike paths of the beach promenade that went for miles.

Instead we walked down to the beach where we had a swim. First place had a gutter and was really rough with small dumpers but because the beach had big stone pebbles it killed your feet!! Nath went in and I only went up to my thighs as it was a little cool for me

Decide to swim somewhere more comfortable later in the day.

Found the bus station and caught the # 100 Monaco bus getting off at Eze Sur Mere (Eze on the beach). The information said we could walk the 1 1/2 Hr straight uphill walk to the village. We decided to wait an hour for the next bus to take us up to Eze Village 492 metres above us. After checking out the beach we decided to go and find somewhere to eat. Had my jambon (ham) sandwich in a baguette…soooo good!! Could only eat half of it. Lunch cost 8 euro including a coke for 2 euro ( about $10 AUD) Nathan ordered kebabs but end up with this monster sized meal!!! ( see piccie)

The # 83 bus to Eze village was crowded as we drove the 20 minutes to the top of the mountain. I was perched on the edge of Mums seat and trying not to fall off as we did these hairpin turns that took us on to the wrong side of the road. Eze village was a gorgeous 12th century village with a ruined fortress perched high on the top of a hill over looking the sparkling blue Mediterranean. It was walled and had narrow cobblestoned streets with no vehicle access.

It looks like no local residents live there now and is all gift shops, restaurants and some hotels. Many rich and famous have stayed here including Bono from U2. Prices outside one restaurant included meals for 90 -136 Euro each!!!! ( $100- 180 AUD)

Near the top we paid 5 euro to go into the cactus garden and up to the top of the ruined fortress……amazing views and great breeze as it was hot in the sun!

Loved all the narrow alleys with vines and flowering plants. Bought myself a cap for 12 e as I had left it behind in Cambodia and really needed one here for all the walking we were doing .

Sat in a restaurant for about 45 mins waiting for the # 112 bus to Monaco. (Started reading a book – first in way too long and have been picking it up to read in waiting times like these) Each bus only cost a euro, which is so cheap

Only about another 20 minutes to the small country and principality of Monaco, 2nd smallest after the Vatican. Ruled since 1200's by the Grimladi family it is small, totally built out, and very pretty and clean and VERY wealthy. I have never seen so many expensive cars – Ferrari, Lotsus, Audi, Mercedes, BMW’s and saw 2 rolls Royce…many are convertibles.

The casino Monte Carlo is an incredibly beautiful building both inside and out with beautiful gardens and fountains out the front of it. When we left there was parked outside a Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Audi!

Nathan wasn’t allowed inside as he is under 18 but Mum and I had a quick look inside at the opulent rooms of marble and high painted ceilings.

It was hot outside but we kept exploring and walked downhill following the port. It was filled with boats that were mini ocean liners…. never seen so much wealth in one place!!! We got down near the bottom and could see over to where the Grimaldi palace was.

Nath at this point discovered his passport had fallen out of his backpack. Off back uphill we went following our tracks and asking everyone coming down the hill if they had seen a passport. I stopped and asked some police who were frisking a man and searching his bag and they pointed me to a police station back down athe bottom of the hill. Further on I saw another policeman and nd asked him. He radioed in and said it was at the station back up near the casino…what a relief!!!!! I then had to find Mum and Nath who were split up and ahead of me.

We then wandered back downhill, bought ourselves a gelatine and bought our train tickets for 3.50 euro back to Nice. It was an incredibly confusing machine to buy the ticket but we asked for help and Nath was able to work it out from there!!!

We stopped off at Villefranche a beautiful old 13th century town with a high walled citadel on the top of the hill around the port. Nath and I went on to the beach which was more pebbly than rocks and much more comfortable to lie/sit on. It was now 5.30pm and the beach was still crowded with families) doesn’t get dark till 9pm.

We jumped in and had a swim and lay on the beach for about an hour before exploring the laneways of the old town and citadel.

Back on the train to Nice and it was packed…standing room only. Nath had nothing to hold on to and nearly went over a couple of times.

We felt like crepes but wandered around the streets near our hostel but couldn’t find crepes.I had really wanted a banana/nutella crepe before leaving France. We ended up eating on he sidewalk at a good Chinese restaurant and grabbed a meal for 8 euro (cheaper than take away at home) Most nights we are eating around 8.30pm - 9pm ( cant imagine eating that late at home)
