Wenlock River - Moreton Telegraph station

Wenlock River (Moreton Telegraph Station) - Monday 22nd August 1977

We were supposed to leave early, but we all got up late and didn't leave until 8.45. Sue, Millsey and I went in Marshall’s car. It was quite comfortable, but the road was really terrible and we were bored with travelling. We had reached the climax of the trip and all we had to do now was drive home, so we were a bit sick of travelling. We crossed lots of creeks again and Cronk got his car stuck in a creek and had to have it towed up the banks of Ellis Creek. We stopped for lunch at McDonnell Creek and then continued on. We drove along this new bit of road to Moreton Telegraph Station. It’s just a house which is used as a post office, etc. Just before it is this old derelict signpost. It is 120 miles to Bamaga, 147 miles to the top and 120 miles to Coen.

We are camping at this nice spot by the Wenlock River, just down from the Telegraph Station. After setting up camp we had a bath in the creek and washed our hair. These 2 wheel drive vehicles attempted to cross the river, but 1 got bogged. I don’t think they’ll get much further north because of the creek crossings. We also passed 14 4-wheel drive vehicles from W.A.. At our camp spot is a sign saying "Please don’t shit in our water as we have to drink it". After dinner of sausages I went to bed.
