Delhunty River

North Alice Creek (near Dulhunty) - Tuesday 16th August 1977

Before breakfast I ran down to the lake to have a quick bath, and I had to hurry because I was on cooking. After leaving, we were going to take a short cut, but ended up getting lost and going around in a big circle. We ended up near Weipa and everyone was quite annoyed. Sue and I went in the truck today. By the end of the day I was covered from head to toe in dust. Because the road is just a track, there lots of low overhanging branches. If you're not careful, you can get wiped out. We had a tree caller who yelled out 'left’ or ‘right’ and we had to duck if it was our side. We were all saying how funny it would look on a film. We had our first major creek crossing today at the Wenlock River. It was quite a wide river, but we had no real trouble getting across it. Another bad thing about the low hanging branches were the green ants nests. If we hit one of the, we had lots of little biting ants in the truck. We just stopped for lunch in the bush. We planned to reach the Dulhunty River tonight, but didn’t quite make it. We camped at Cannibal Creek about 8 miles before the Dulhunty River. It looks like a real crocodile creek as it is really dark and murky. We all went to have a bath in big groups. We also have to wear shoes around the campsite because a scorpion was seen. We didn’t have croc watch tonight because we were sufficiently far enough away. Everyone came and listened to the cassette player.
