Near the Laura River

Laura River - Thursday 11th August 1977

We got up early and went in Stan's car. We drove up the coast road to Mossman and saw some really nice beaches. We had to go into Mossman to get 20 loaves of bread. We had to catch up to everyone later on. From here on the road was terrible. It was dirt and very dusty. Everything is very dry. Because we were all hungry we opened a loaf of bread while we were driving and made peanut paste sandwiches. They were beautiful and fresh. Then we stopped at Palmer River for lunch. Because it was so hot, everyone threw each other in fully clothed. It was fun. After spending a couple of hours there, we drove on and stopped at this place just before Laura to see some aboriginal paintings. They were impressive; there were wallabies, platypus, bats, emus, and spacemen. We then went rock climbing and Millsey and I climbed up this big rock and got a good view. We then drove a couple of miles to the Laura River. We are all sleeping outside, because it is so hot and sandy and the tents wouldn’t stay up. After a revolting dinner of steak some people went fishing. It was a really beautiful night and there were tons of stars and you could see the Milky Way. I even saw a falling star.
