Home Hill

Home Hill - Sunday 7th August 1977

We got up really early this morning as we have a long way to go. We got up at 5.00-5.30 am, pulled down the tents etc. We then had a breakfast of saveloys and crumpets again. It was really yummy! Today Sue, Cathy, Rod, Paul and I went in Stan's Toyota Cruiser. It’s really good as we go ahead of everyone, as we are the group that has to set up tents before everyone else. We left at 7.30 am before the others and for a long way we were driving in really thick fog, but then it cleared. There is mostly bush around us and this road is notorious for its accidents. We came across our first one not long after we left. It was a head on collision between a semi-trailer and a livestock truck. The 2 trucks were wrecked and the semi and its goods were scattered right across the road, blocking it off. Luckily no-one was killed. Tons of semis come along this road. Last night tons of semis just came flying by and honked their horns.

We kept driving and stopped at a nice rest area called Funnel Creek where we went to the toilets. We then kept driving and the country changed from bush to sugar cane fields. As we climbed the range Stan stopped at this place, as there was a lovely view of the fields just before Sarina. We arrived in Sarina at about 10.15 and have to wait for all the others to catch up, so I got a chance to catch up with my writing. It is really hot here and just like summer. It is now 11.30 and we are still waiting for them to catch up. Sue and I got further restrictions today - we are no longer allowed to wear skirts, because the boys might see our pants!

Because we lost 3 hours, Stan had to drive like mad to catch the others up. Mackay was a really nice town - we drove through sugar cane fields and bypassed the town of Bowen. However, we stopped off at a really nice beach just before Bowen. The water was beautiful and warm and we could see Whitsunday Island. We then drove on towards Home Hill. All the fields were full of big birds which were brolgas I think. We camped at a rest area just before Home Hill and we were surrounded by cane fields. Because it was Sunday night, we saw lots of cane fires, ready to harvest on Monday. For dinner we had chicken soup and then pineapple. Then I spoiled my good dinner by making a cup of tea and hogging into a packet of biscuits.
