Pandas and Trains

Left from hostel in a mini bus to visit the Panda Conservation Centre. It was another grey sky day 7 a bit nippy this morning so jumpers were on!!

Reached it in 15 minutes & spent about 3 hours there. The pandas are an endangered species & there are only aprox 1500 left in the wild. They live off bamboo & eat most of the day. In the wild they live on their own & roam over an area of 5 - 6 km.

First we saw the big pandas & the small red pandas & then our favourite ... " the babies"!!! We were able to file past the hospital section where they had a 2 week old baby & twin 4 month old babies. The 4 months were lying in a cot & such a cute size to cuddle. The 2 week old has no hair & is so pink.

Next door was the outside pen where they were feeding the pandas their bamboo. These were the 18 month old toddlers, who are now just old enough to leave their mothers. When they are born they are still not fully developed & their survival rate for the first 6 months of life is not high. They start to get furr & their dark markings after 4 weeks, can see by 8 weeks & start to crawl by 6 months.

They are so cute & roly poly & unexpectantly good climbers for such a round animal!!! We watched their antics for ages - climbing trees, falling off things, lying back & licking their bowl etc

I Nath went in to another area ( I wasn't allowed) & could sit next to & touch one of the toddler pandas. It cost 1000 yuan ( $160 AUS) An awful lot but a once in a lifetime time experience. He said it was soooo soft!!!

Came back & checked out. walked down the road to the local supermarket & bakery & stocked up on snacks for the 24 hour train ride , just in case the food is gross( heard it was!). We will leave here on a local bus at 3pm to get to the train station & depart at 4.25pm. Have booked 2 bottom bunks & hope we get them. Plan on watching movies & reading - will be a nice rest!!
