Wood stoves & hot chocolate in Shangri-La

Had THE worst nights sleep – this bed was so hard & the ¼ inch thin mattress just didn't do it & the wood creaked all night.

Before I woke Nath I had a shower – definitely was needed! Said goodbye to Sabrina & Co & went to check in at Kevin’s Trekker Inn just out of the old town. We only have our small backpacks as our big ones are in Lijiang. It is so easy getting around with just 1 small bag – mind you there isn’t much in there!

Shangri- La is the start of the Tibetan world & already has a different look & feel. Tibetan women wear bright pink scarves wrapped around their heads & buildings have a different look as well. Rooves are woof shingles & there are gold bells on buildings. It has a population of 125,000 & is very laidback & cruisy. Streets aren't busy & the place feels very relaxed. Apparently in December the town mostly shuts down due to the snow & you often can't get in or out.

Booked in a 3 bed dorm for 20 yuan a night each. Passed Wolfgang in the street & caught up – he is staying there as well. Caught number 1 bus to the bus station & bought our tickets to Lijiang tomorrow for 40 yuan each. The local bus system is so easy & buses come every 5 min & you just put 1 yuan ( 20 c) in a box & get change if you need it.

Then caught number 3 bus to see the monastery. Decided didn’t want to pay the 85 yuan each to go in so had a wander & came across this massive white yak. We paid 10 each & hopped on it – we thought for a ride but it was just for a photo. This wild long haired big Tibetan man looked after it & broke into song for the photo moment.

Spent the afternoon wandering around Old Town & its lovely cobblestoned streets. Nath bought himself a tibetan knife & a tiger skin. I got myself some hiking shoes & pants that wear less than 1/4 what I would pay back in Australia. We wandered up the top of the hill where a temple was & spinning gold thing which must be a Tibetan Budhist thing. Great view over the city & surrounding hills where the autumn leaves are turning red & yellow. We wondered why we couldn't see any high mouintain peaks around us & realised that we were now on the mountain top!! We were at 3200 metres elevation now. The bigger mountains of 6000 metres were a couple of hours away.

Wasn't feeling great - had a headache from my poor nights sleep so had a massage for 58 yuan & felt worse!!!! It especially hurt my quads - sore from all that uphill yesterday. So many nice cafes around & decided to try a yak cheese platter - served with toast & is warmed & really nice. Went to Tara's Gallery for dinner - a beautiful old wooden house, with a fire burning & beautiful decorated rooms with lounges. Made myself comfortable right in front of the fireplace & ordered Yak Momos ( dumplings) which I hated!! The last 2 days everywhere we have gone a kitten has made its home on my lap - miaowing & purring loudly. Tonight was no exception & another cute kitten made a beeline for me!!

Walking home through the town square it was lovely to stop & watch the locals do their nightly dancing. It is in a huge big circle & they all seem to know what to do. Such a nice community thing to do & their were people representing all generations from young to old!

Got back to the hostel around 8pm & went & sat in the community room next to the wood stove & had a hot chocolate. Nice!!!! Caught up with Wolfgang & Alison who arrived from Haba today. Also met 3 other aussie girls & hung out with them for awhile. Good fun!! My bed was so comfy & had a huge doona - can see a good nights sleep coming!
