Exploring beautiful Old Town

Left Nath to sleep & I went out at 8.30am to get brekkie & have a wander. We still weren't sure if we wanted to stay at the May Hostel another night as it was really quiet & there were no people there hanging out.

Had a look at a few places & then grabbed brekkie at the Prague Cafe. Lonely Planet recommended the brekkie of eggs, ham, fried goats cheese, potato pancake & homemade bread. Came with orange juice for 30 yuan and it was good !!!!!

Loved wandering around the town & the streets were quiet the first couple of hours. Even though it is busy & has so many shops for the tourist, you still the local people working & living as they always do, especially off the main tourist streets. You will come across little squares & see groups of old Naxi women in their traditional clothes, old men playing cards or chess, women drawing water from the well or streams with buckets, washing their clothes in the stream.

Lijiang has been the base of Naxi minority for the last 1400 years!. Naxi women wear blue blouses & trousers covered by blue or black apron. The t shaped apron they wear stops the basket they carry from chaffing.

Woke up Nath at 11am, got him some brekkie & explored a part of town we hadn’t seen before, There are hundreds of Inns to stay in tucked up every alley. Came across the 3 Well Pit & the locals still use the 3 pools. The first one is for drinking water, the second for washing veggies & the 3rd for washing clothes. All 3 were being used as we wandered past. Most of the time we were totally lost & couldn’t work out where we were, but eventually you find your way out of the maze!!After lunch we checked back in & got an ensuite room as Nath still not feeling well .Costs a bit more at about $20 a night.

I left Nath to rest & explored along the river around the water wheels entrance to the Old Town & then up in the hills so that I could look down over Old Town to this sea of slate grey rooves . It looks flat as there are no high buildings. The old town is 800 years old & so well preserved & anything new or restored is built in the traditional way. At one time I got totally lost & couldn’t find my way out & kept getting stuck in dead ends & only saw locals in these alleys.

Came back & got Nath & we went out for dinner. He was craving pizza so we got that. Over the road I could hear loud singing, so popped into this place & watched some traditional singing & dancing around a fire & everyone dancing in a circle. Pretty cool! Cool again tonight & needing a jumper – Nathan is happy with that where I would prefer to be hot!

Chinglish signs - these are great! Some you can make sense of & some you can't!!! They are on walls all around the old town.
