Trekking in the mud!!!

Woke up early to the sound of rain & roosters & the valley was covered by mist. Sat around talking with everyone & eating yummy banana pancakes.

Set out in our rain ponchos & the track was slippery & muddy like you would not believe. Some people in another group were covered in mud as they had fallen so many times. Sho our guide was great & helped us through the bad bits so we wouldn't fall. We walked for 5 km to the waterfall & you had to concentrate so much so you wouldn’t fall. The downhills were the worst as it was like a slippery slide!!

Made it to the waterfall with just very muddy wet shoes and then went into a Red Zao Village & into a school classroom. Had lunch at the river & then cut the rest of the trek short due to the muddy conditions & headed back up the hill to the road where a mini bus drove us back to Sapa. Now that was a scary 30 minute ride on this narrow windy road. The driver didn’t go fast but drove soooo close to these sheer cliff drop offs. Water was also rushing across the road in places as it came down the mountain & I had visions of being swept over the mountain!!!

Found out when we got back to town that a typoon had crossed the central coast at Danang/Hoi an killing people & causing flooding.

Checked into the Lotus Hotel for $6 a night!! Our cheapest yet! No air con but you don’t need it here and there are big doonas on the bed. Had nice hot showers & went over the road to the Highland bakery for some cake, hot chocolate for me & latte for Nath. Ended up staying there for dinner & using the WIFI, before having a walk around town at 9pm & heading home for bed. bumped into Mike & Carla from the USA again & caught up with them.
