2 Days rest in Hanoi - Is that possible?

Woke up both mornings & left Nath asleep while I went out to hunt for a bakery to buy some brekkie. Found one a couple of blocks away & bought a baguette & creamed cheese & moist yummy pineapple cake. Having a bit of rest & sleep catch up –I get up around 9am & Nath around 11am!! We needed it!!

Walked around the streets of the Old Quarter which are bustling, busy & fascinating! I feel lost all the time in these winding alleys where the street name changes every block! I usually have a good sense of direction but not happening here!! Thank goodness Nath has got his bearings here more than me!!!

Nath has loved the shopping & bought lots of clothes – jeans, shirts & cardigans. Eating out is so cheap. My breakfast cost 70 c & dinner $2. It is hot again & makes you so tired.

We got a cyclo for 3 hours to go a little further afield & went to the infamous Hanoi Hilton ( prison) It is no longer used & only a small part left but we looked in the gruesome cells & read about the appalling conditions. There is still a guillotine outside the death row cells.

Next to Museum of Literature which devoted to the teachings & studies of Confuscious. It is more lovely gardens, ponds & buildings rather than a museum & has beautiful trees.

We went to the Mausoleum to see the embalmed body of the beloved Uncle Ho ( Ho Chi Minh) but he has been sent to Russia for his yearly embalming. They love him & talk about him & have posters everywhere of him. We looked around the beautiful grounds and simple homes where he lived .

Got our cyclo to drive past the the beautiful French opera house & then to Hoan Kiem Lake which is near the Old Quarter.

It used to be a part of the Red River years ago before it changed course. It has lovely parks all around it & is full of people out to sit & play.

Nath needed some KFC so we snacked there before walking some more around looking in the trillions of shops that are here.

Bumped into 2 lots of people we have met on our travels - small world! Had a coke at one of the local drinking corners which is like a pub except you sit on plastic stools ( kiddy size) to have a drink & watch the world go by!!

Our hotel is a VERY skiiny building calleed a tunnel building. Lots were built at a certain time as their narrow street frontage meant they paid less taxes.

Today after checking out we wandered around the alleys near this lovely stone catholic church that had its bells ringing.

Had a massage for $5 us but it really hurt so wasn't much fun!! Nath bought more clothes and I had a lovely talk with my hubby & he couldn't believe the number of horns he could hear beeping as we talked in the street!

Next... plan to get a hairwash & hang out in the airconWIFI Cafe before getting a taxi toi the train station. Our sleeper train to Sapa leaves at 8.30pm - here's hoping we get some sleep as it is a 10 hour trip. Booked our train tickets through our hotel for $23 US each & got business carriage on SP 7 or 8 train. Was recomended not ton get the SP 1 or 2 train from some people I met

. Hanoi check out

Learnt a valuable lesson today – In Vietnam you have to hand in your passport at every place you stay & they give it back when you check out. Today I checked the passports when they gave them back & they had given me someone else's instead of Nathans!!! Could have been ugly if that had been discovered when we reached our next town!!!

Sinh Cafe Open Bus – This is a great company to book your bus tickets to travel through Vietnam. In Hanoi there was a Sinh Cafe on every corner but they are all fakes. Here is the address of the real ones in Hanoi:
