Hue - Citadel & Perfume River

Short bus trip to Hue - left at 8am & there by 11.30am & that was stopping for 30 minutes at Marble Mountain, 10 mins in Danang & then to pick up some passengers on the northern end of the tunnel. Pretty scenery as we followed the coast - with lots of small villages & towns. Nath watched a couple of movies & I read my book. The bus goes so slowly ( 40 km) all the way & slower when you pull over for passing vehicles. As usual when the bus pulls up touts approach you asking if you have accomodation. If not they will take you for free on their motorbike to a hotel where they get commission. On 2 bikes we jumped with all our luggage - love the way in Vietnam bikes carry a spare helmet for you ( they don't do this in Cambodia).

We booked in for the night - very basic but $10 & has WIFI. Unbelievably hot again & we had sweat poring off us ( again!!). I had walked up to the rooftop & seen a coffee shop a block away & Nathan needed reviving in the heat so headed there for him to have a latte & be revived in the aircon. That done we started walking to the Sinh Cafe to book the next leg of our trip & passed Phuong Nam Cafe which I had read on trip advisor was where 2 great motorbike guides hung out. Asked if he was in & they called him in & we have now booked he & his friend for tomorrow for $10 each for the day.

Booked our bus tickets to Nimh Binh - 180,000Dong ( around $12 AUS) each & then grabbed a moto to take us to the Citadel because it was just tooooo hot to walk! The citadel is over the other side of the Perfume River & is a 10 km walled & moated collection of palaces & buildings built in the 1800's by the emperor at that time. It cost us 55,000 Dong to go in ( $4 Aus). We didn't cover it all as it is huge - lot of it has fallen down due to war & typoons but what is left standing is beautiful ornate teak buildings with very ornate facades. Outside is a 37m flagpole flying the Vietnam flag - can see it from everywhere in town

Around 3pm we grabbed a late lunch & Nath had KFC at a shopping Centre which made him pretty happy! We walked back over the bridge & through one of the lovely riverside parks & considered going on a boat trip on the river but decided against it. Wandered the streets some more & Nath bought a pocket watch. Had dinner at a street cafe - nice cheap food, hung out at WIFI cafe & then went back to our dodgy room where everything is falling apart & Nath's bed did fall down!! Only here 1 night!!!
