Accidents & Arachnids!!!!

KAMPONG CHAM

We are here for the rainy season & it has rained most days, sometimes for a few hours. It has kept the weather at a really comfortable temperature - the nicest I have felt in Cambodia.

This morning we caught a bus to Kampong Cham which was 120km and took us 3 1/2 hours. Cathy & I sat in the front seats & did lots of squealing as we witnessed cars & trucks heading for us & only pulling over at the last minute. Our driver was overtaking everything & on the horn continuosly – our van which was following us couldn't keep up with us. Beck on the other side of the aisle squealed even more than us & it kept making the driver laugh!

On the way the bus stopped at a town called Skun (aka spider town) for a rest. I decided to stock up and a few treats for everybody. I bought a scrawny cooked duck with its head and feet still attached for 3000 riel (75c), 2 cooked tarantulas and cooked frogs for 1000 real each (25c) and a cup full of crickets. Joel set the record for being the first Citipointe person ever to eat a whole tarantula. So I thought he might likes to try some other tasty morsels !!!

At the bus station we had a motor trailer meet us.....this is a long wooden trailer pulled by a motorbike where the team of 13 sat with their legs hanging off the side. It was raining, so we all had our blue, yellow and lime green which made us look like a bunch of teletubbies. We and everybody was laughing at the foolishness of how we looked as we rode along the streets. We stopped off at the Lazy Mekong Daze Restaurant by the riverfront overlooking the wide flooded Mekong River for our lunch and the boys played darts & pool while we waited .

As we left the town the potholes in the road got bigger and the ride got bumpier. We left that onto a muddy track where things got very interesting. It was so muddy that our motorbike started slipping out of control as we headed directly for some bushes. Before we could hit the bushes the trailer flipped over and Jake and I were thrown off into the mud. Nath and the others managed to stay onboard and we were so lucky no one got crushed underneath. We were all laughing hysterically as we staggered around in the mud. We lifted the trailer back up & tried to hop back on but it just wasn’t happening, so we walked the last 100 metres through lots of mud!

We are now staying at Heartlands church which is just out of town but in the middle of a village surrounded by cows and fields out crops. I organised our animal snacks on a plate & offered them around. Nath bravely held a spider & freaked out at the feel of its hairy legs & then bit one off but spat it out. Next Ben, Aaron & I ate crickets which we thought tasted a bit like chicken but I had to spit out a sharp spiky leg! Next Aaron grossed us out by biting the ducks neck in half & then brave Jeremy had us squealing & shrieking as he licked & then ate a spider. Becc & Cathy bravely held a spider & Cathy put it in her mouth with her eyes closed for a photo moment.

After dinner the boys went to town for an icecream & Cathy & I had a massage at the house by a local girl for $3 for 30 minutes which I fell asleep in.
