Busy bustling Bangkok

Up at 5.30 am and Tony dropped us to the Phnom Penh airport. Paid US$25 Departure tax for me and #$13 for Nathan. Arrived in Bangkok 9.50 am. Got our luggage and caught Airport Bus No. 3 for 100B each. Took 50 mins and dropped us to Soi II on Sukhumvit. Only had to walk about 100m, but pretty hard with our suitcases as no real footpath. Walked down Sol II and turned left on a sub soi and found our youth hostel, Suk II. Nearly missed it..... old wooden house surrounded by greenery on the corner of the lane. Very quaint and pokey with lots of character. Definitely the place for a backpack and not suitcases as we were on the 3rd floor and had to carry them up small windy staircases!! Our room is spartan, but clean and comfortable. The whole place is so rustic and unusual. The corridor to our room is dark, has wooden planks, rocks, walls of old brick, timber, iron, etc. No windows in our room but a glass door that opens onto a fire escape. Has aircon!! So hot and humid.

First impression of Bangkok was that it is hot, smelly, terrible traffic and pollution, but there are many cute areas tucked away and we soon found our way around using the Skytrain and Underground and totally avoiding the chaos on the roads. Nathan wanted McDonald's, so wandered down there and he had a cheeseburger meal for 90 B. We both had a McFlurry, which was yummy. Went up to the skytrain at our closest station, Nana, and went to Siam and looked in two big shopping centres. Nathan found Converses in a store which he loves for 1,900 B which is $75 Aus. He wants to buy a pair for him and Nick. Has lots of interesting restaurants and coffee shops. Went next door to Siam Paragon which is very flash and has an amazing entrance of glass, greenery and waterfalls. It is full of designer shops and had a Ferrari store with a red and black one.

We then caught the Underground to Lumphini. Most rides are 10-35 B. At Lumphini we went to the San Luam Night Markets. They were huge and it took us 2 hours to go through about one third of it. Found some good stuff. I bought Nick some army shorts for 300 B, me a brown bag 550 , Birkenstocks 300B, 2 pair shoes for 850 B.

Nathan bought Brad a BMW keyring for 280 B and himself a Batman belt for 400 B. I also bought one for Michael. Going through the cash! Had dinner at this lovely corner where lots of restaurants. Fairy lights and lots of trees. Caught the train back and got home at 9 pm. Nathan did homework for an hour and I went to bed at 11 pm.
