Cornwall & Steep coastal villages

Lynmouth - 2/3/82 - Rising Hotel - sunny at first, then rain. Windy and very cold.

Got up 7am and went for a walk across moors in our new Wellingtons. All uphill and we were exhausted. Walked through bog and sank up to our knees and often got quite stuck. Saw what we thought was jellyfish, but really frog spawn. Some areas so water logged, the whole area just bounced up and down. Walked to top of a tor, very windy and cold - good view down to village. Got back 8.30 am starving and ate huge breakfast. Sad to leave Widecombe. Stopped off at craft shop and bought prints. Drove through Chingford - quaint old village. Then to Okehampton, saw old ruined castle on hill and old water mill. Drove to Lydford and saw Castle Drogo built in 1910. Lydford had old castle used for keeping prisoners. Drove down to gorge and looked at it from high bridge - magnificent rushing stream. One and a half mile walk closed, so drove up to other end and went down steep walk to White Lady Waterfall which is 100 ft. Then crossed into Cornwall and went to Tintagel. Had a pub lunch of pastie and chips. Freezing cold and very windy. Went to 11th century Parish church near cliffs and nearly got blown away. Walked to Tintagel Castle along track by stream. Lot of it closed due to rock falls. In magnificent position : mainland and rock island with beach below.

Had a look in some local shops. Tintagel is a lovely old village - everything built of same dark stone. Gorgeous old post office. Drove through Boscastle and up to Clovelly. Gorgeous old village. Parked car at top of village and walked down steep narrow cobbled street. Houses nearly touch across street. Goes down to harbour and dry dock. Black pebbled beach. Very hard work going back up. Drove through Bideford and Barnstaple and beach place of Instow to Lynmouth arriving just on dark. In valley by beach - down steep hill. Looks very interesting. Staying at Rising Sun, gorgeous old thatched inn by harbour. Has bar and restaurant downstairs and up winding stairs to bedroom. Sloping floors and uneven passageways. Lovely bay window looks out to harbour. Beautiful room with TV, radio and tea making facilities. Costs 23 pounds 85p. Had dinner downstairs and watched TV in bed.
