Exploring Chiang Mai

Brad sent a text and it woke me at 4.45 am!! Couldn't get back to sleep but let Nathan sleep till 8.30 am – so he had a good 12 hours. We went over to the verandah of the main house for breakfast where we were served breakfast of tea/coffee, juice, chopped fruit and then a choice of hot breakfast. I had a Thai omelette on rice which was really nice and Nathan had baked beans, eggs and toast.

We walked over to the Warotet markets to buy some things to take over for Kam’s family. Nathan bought a box of juicy fruit for 180B. We bought for Kam – oil, 2kg rice, noodles, pork crisps, pot, ladle, assorted cakes, biscuits and a bag of vegetables. We had fun wandering around checking it all out – saw pigs’ heads and feet, chicken feet, chicken head and seafood. After taking it all home we set off to be out all day exploring. We walked along the riverfront and checked out all the little cafes and a 400B guesthouse which was fine for $13 a night. Walked across the bridge covered with flowers and elephants’ heads. Looked at the Wat (temple) near our place – sleeping dogs everywhere. Wandered up Tae Pae Road – looking in shops, looked in some Wats (beautiful buildings – many covered with gold decoration). At one of them we paid 100B ($2.45) for Nathan to set all these little birds free. Stopped at a bakery and Nathan bought a twisted donut and I bought prune cake which was beautiful. Got to Tapae Gate and the moat around the old city. It was built in 1249. Kept wandering and had a late lunch of Pad Thai noodles and Tofu with Bean Sprouts. Nathan’s favourite is Pad Thai.

Caught a tuk tuk to the moated area with little lanes where there are lots of backpacker guesthouses. Then caught a tuk tuk to the night bazaar and bought lots of stuff. Earlier in the day we wandered down a cute lane (soi) and found a massage place. I had a full body oil massage 200B ($6.80) for 1 hour and Nathan, a traditional Thai massage where you dress in Kung fu clothes. All very nice. Nathan thinks it’s OK. Changed another $400 Aus. Booked our trek for Thursday through the guesthouse. Trekker Tours 1600 B $55 each for 2 nights, 3 days. They pick us up at the guest house and provide backpacks. After dinner at same place as last night we caught a tuk tuk home (40B $1.40). Exhausted after our big day.
